Is it a mistake to purchase things from JC Whitney? For example - body parts, bumpers, etc...

I've bought a few things from them and they are good about taking things back. They do huge business so they must be doing something right. I think you'll find their stuff is basically designed just to do the job and no more. If you're trying to keep your VW running they'll be OK and will save you money. However, if you're restoring or trying for something outstanding or that will last longer there are places that sell higher quality merchandise.

"You get what you pay for" comes to mind. I buy stuff through JCWhitney, though, and am not knocking them. It just depends on whatcha want. I would not buy fenders from JCWhitney. For body parts, I would try and find original German metal. Pretty much anything original is better than any aftermarket part.

Make sure you see a well known BRAND NAME if you buy. Anything else is probably offshore manufactured

There are typical local VW parts stores where I live that cater to people who are sparing no expense in restoring their cars. From what I can tell, all of their parts are ordered out of the Rocky Mountain Motorworks catalogs, marked up 20 dollars and sold "as is, no refunds and no exchanges under any condition".
This is why JC Whitney rocks, since so many VW parts are just plain junk no matter who you buy them from. JC Whitney will send you a refund in a couple of weeks no questions asked. This is handy when you get the part in the mail and you realize either 1) it doesn't fit or 2) the old rusty, worn out part already on your car actually looks and works better than the new crap they sent you. |

If you want quality parts at decent prices, and good advice to go with it, you can't do better than www.aircooled.net
John refuses to stock low quality stuff, so whatever you get from him you can rely on.

Rocky Mountain is not cheap, and in some cases isn't the best but my experience with them is different than daves.I have ordered a few items from them and only one was incorrect. I once sent back the wrong e-brake cable that I had installed but wasn't damaged or nasty looking and they replaced it with the correct one and they knew I had installed it.Theyve always treated me right. I would get body parts and bumpers from Wolfsburg West if you want quality and good fit. If you buy from JC whitney you may be disappointed a time or two,but if price is the only thing that matters then they are probably the place to order from. I would at least use the 800 numbers from a few other suppliers and see if anyone else can match or come close on price first.
