I'm looking for advice on how to replace the grommet on the master brake cylinder. Brake fluid is seeping around the top grommet where the gravity feed filler line enters the master cylinder. I have a new German origin grommet from Jbugs part Code: 113611817.
I installed a new German origin (single port) master cylinder. Put in a new grommet, with difficulty, before installing the master cylinder. I'm surprised that grommet is leaking. Maybe that grommet is an after market or damaged when I inserted it. I can move the grommet up and down so it seems loose. Now the master cylinder is installed, I'd like to replace the grommet.
I think I can 'dig' the grommet out. But how to insert the new grommet?
The car is 1964 Karmann Ghia. Thanks for any advice. |

Some masters require a metal washer under that rubber stopper. I'm not sure which, but if it was missing the extra space might allow leaks.
This one is a Bug single master:

Thank you for so much detail of master cylinders.
In my case, the master cylinder does not show a requirement for a spacer washer. But I will recheck. My main concern is how to insert a new grommet. With the left front wheel removed, the master cylinder is assessable. The grommet is a tight fit into the gravity feed hole. I don't want to damage the rubber. |

You might try using a large "C" clamp as a press in order to squeeze the grommet into place. A socket about the same diameter as the hole in the master cylinder placed between the grommet and clamp will help apply the force right where needed. Lubricate the grommet with brake fluid to reduce friction.

Removing the gas tank will give you the best access to the master cylinder. It's only 4 bolts and takes but a few minutes. Siphon out most of the gas first to make the tank easier to handle. _________________ '63 Ragtop (current)

| Not mentioned or maybe it was but I’d lube the new grommet with brake fluid and it will go in easier.😀 |

| Hey Old Vine did you solve your leak? I have the same problem. Was wondering if you added the washer and if it worked. |

Old post but I recently had a similar problem. Turns out the metal line from the reservoir that goes into the grommet was pushed in TOO FAR. The grommet has an area just past the entrance where the bubbled end of the metal line sits.
Push the line too far in and it will leak. Pull it back out until the bubbled end sits in the groove and it seals. |
