It's a heat treated steel stamp. I work for a specialty metal coating company so I know lots of folks in the metal forming industry. I sent you a PM.

Jeff, nice to see you again at the Treffen. The revised VW stamping looks great. I'll be sending in an order ASAP. Very Happy

Received mine today. Very, very well done. When compared to the original, the only difference is the original's "pocket wear".

Thanks Jeff, beautifully done.

Great! I am glad they arrived safely. I was having nightmares worrying that I might lose your original. Thanks again!

wow, reading this thread intriged me, my 71 Super Beetle came with the original keys, and the keychain also had that little keytag on it, however the number does not seem to match anything (certainly not the VIN) it is only 7 numbers long (my VIN being 10)
VIN is 1112833281
Keytag shows 1012483
I suppose that it's probably the wrong one for the car ? in which case I may need to order a replica Smile Mine looks a little different though

No, I am sticking with the older design. I don't think most folks that have a later vehicle care as much about the "correctness" of the tag style. I have sold quite a few tags to folks with 70's and later VW's, using the "58" style tag. Besides, the 58 tag is thicker and doesn't have the sharp edges.

I would have loved a "correct" style for my 71 (yeah I'm anal like that lol) but I'm still going to get one of those, just to have one Smile

If you saw the thread, the later ones got really cheesy and temporary-looking. You could probably make a reasonable facsimile using a typewriter and a piece of old beer can!

I have a later one in front of me as we speak, it's not that cheesy at all, it is not very thick but still thicker than an aluminum can. I just wish I could have one just like that but with the correct VIN on it, that one came with the car but it doesn't match the VIN ...

You would need to go for a Schlitz can since the aluminum is thinner. Wink

I mailed it out today. Thanks

Can you please post a photo of the one from your '54? That would be the earliest one I have seen.

Here are a couple more examples from the gallery:

Jeff,

I got my ket tags the other day and want to give you special thanks for making me the "one off" key tag for my 2007 Rabbit. It is the perfect touch to the rabbit's body off pan restoration. I know you thought I was being over the top when I asked for it, but I do appreciate your efforts.
