| OK, I am thinking about building a street/strip car and am iffy about what tranny setup to use. Alot of people use swingaxle cars to build their strip cars but most streetable cars are IRS. I was just wondering what the pro's and cons of both would be? This car is going to see the street alot and MPG isn't a big thing for me. Any input would be great. |

| I say if you have the money go IRS if your cheap go S/A. THe only real reason to stay away from IRS is the cost. |

IRS with "Thing" flanges and stub axles, Type 2 CVs and Say-A-Way axles are plenty strong.
That's what I have... full steel car 1650lbs and runs high 12s.

| This is exactly what I am looking for. You always hear listen to your parents, well my Dad said IRS too lol. Now to find a good pre 66 body and a post 68 pan. Anyone know of a good website that goes step by step for a flip frontend? |

umm, no... some people go s/a because it's lighter... i've heard maybe a 40 lb difference?
but irs gets my vote!

Supposedly the Swing axle trannies are better for drag racing.....beefier I guess....

Here's another reason NOT to use IRS trans for dragracing.Thing output flanges are still connected to these end gears.Out of the two parts,what's going to break? ERCO sells some stronger endgears,but they are almost always out of stock,and will cost you a pretty good amount to upgrade to the larger flanges,CV's and stubaxles.If you're going with a swingaxle,you won't be breaking any of these.Paul

i can play the fud-mongering game as well  take a look at this swing-axle ghia, it's has a super heavy duty s/a setup that mike found the weak spot on:

i don't think that you are going to have a wheel break off like that on an irs car.
btw, the current pro mod record is an 8.99, and it's NOT a swing axle car.

I'd sure assume it has the Dave Folts setup, so were not talking IRS in the "conventional" sense.

i believe that the dave folts setup is for swing axle only, NOT irs.
has it been awhile since you threw a strike?

Well I just picked up a 65 bug ( for free  ) with almost no rust, so it's a swing axle for me. I'll post picks soon, it's got wild late 60's graphics painted on it. Time to start looking for speed parts now  |
