I was just looking through some old catalogs, and I found a listing for the MotoMeter set for Ovals.
They list 2 models, one for Beetles upto August 1955, and the other for Beetles after August 1955.

Does anyone know what the difference is?

Then in another catalog, you could order 3 options. They were:
one with a clock,
one with Ammeter instead of the clock
one with a motor-therm instead of the clock (not sure what motortherm means, catalog is in German). Why would it have this motor-therm when there is an oil temp gauge already.

Here you can see the 2 versions compared:
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

The early version (up to '55) has the warning lights in the gauges, and the gauges say Motest.
The later version ('55 and up) has the warning lights in the panel, and the gauges say Motometer.
I believe the Ammeter always says Motometer?

If anyone has a 60mm clock or Ammeter for sale, let me know, I need one for my set. Thanks.
(Did the clocks come in 2 versions as well? Motest /Motometer?)

Don't know about the motor-therm, but I'm sure Bob can help you out! Wink

I think the fuel gauge sending units are different on each version as well to compensate for the different tank shapes.
I believe the earlier gauges read MotoMeter & the later versions read Motest though. Sort of like the Perhaus clock (early) vs the VDO clock (late). All the same company, but a higher subsidiary department.

There are two different styles of panels. The first style requires the gauges to have warning lights and the gauges should be MotoMeter. The second panel has the warning lights in the panel itself and the gauges should not have any lights. The gauges could be MotoMeter or Motest but they should not have lights and should not be mixed...............either all MotoMeter or all Motest. The problem developes when you have an early panel and you want to run the Amp gauge in the center instead of the clock. All 60mm Amp gauges I have seen are Motest and not MotoMeter, so I don't believe that the early panels were ever the Rally gauge option. The later panel could have the Amp gauge in the center and all the fuel and oil gauges should then be Motest as well. One last little twist.......the gauges could be in German or English and they should not be mixed that way either. The fuel gauge is always on the left, the clock or amp gauge in the center and the oil gauge on the far right . The panels could be painted or chrome with the chrome almost always seen on the later panel.
I have seen most of the painted panels to be ivory in color but a flat black was also available for people who wanted to paint the panel to match their dash. All the gauges are date stamped so it makes it easy to figure out which gauges go with which panel but that's it in a nutshell, so to speak.

Here is my early panel with MotoMeter gauges with lights.............German script...........clock in center.

Glenn, perhaps you can correct the description of this picture?
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/album_page.php?pic_id=38436
You mixed up the warning lights placement..

I have no idea what "motortherm" could be unless it was head temp. I have this gauge in my Porsche and it could fit in the center 60mm hole as well.

I am also looking for the 60mm Amp gauge..............so if you get two Kai............send me one. You know the address. Wink

Actually, the gauge set shown above (with the warning lights inside the gauge) all have the Motest script. So I guess Motest & MotoMeter were available both with & without warning lamps.
But much like the Perohaus/VDO dash clock debate, I'd rather have Motometer & Perohaus on my gauges Wink

I've been running an MotoMeter outside Porsche tempeture gauge............refaced by North Hollywood Speedometer to match the oval gauges. Wink

Yeah, sweet dash. I like the stop watches....nice.

Hey, does anyone know if there are replacement wire terminals for the back side of the rally gauge panel. They look like six terminal blocks on each side of the clock. For those whose are missing, what have y'all done in place of them? Or have you just left them out? If anyone knows a source for them, can you point me in the right direction?

Here's a pic of the back with the wire terminals I'm referring to. Mine are missing.

Bought this set.
looks to be all correct.
Only the fuel gauge does not have an light in it.
maybe they replaced it?
Needs some polish work too.
