Can these tranys still be rebuilt. The trany shop here in Canada says that the clutches or listings are no longer available. My trany has sat for 20 years and he said the clutches would have dried out and in very short time after the running of the trany they would come apart. The trany has and not moved in 20 years. So I just want to know if the parts are still available. Thanks

the tranny shop is more or less correct. internal parts for the 003 are getting difficult to find. the parts jobbers that service the transmission shops have discontinued them. try long enterprises.

Scott do you know any good trany guys in the area. I am going to make a couple more calls in the coming weeks to see if I can find someone who knows the old VW tranys well.

yes, i have a shop we use for automatic transmissions.

any auto transmission shop that has a clue can rebuild an 003, it is common (or at least used to be) and not a complicated unit to service. the jobbers in this area do not usually have the hard parts for the 003, however.

The trany guy here said that it was a 7 hour job. So at 70 an hour shop labour and 200 in parts I am looking at $700.00 to rebuild the thing.

last time i did one, we charged 550.00 for a rebuilt 010, P&L. that was last year, not sure if parts costs are higher lower or the same. so you might save a few bucks that way.

The price would have to be really cheap. I think this one only has 60,000 on it. So I don't mind throwing a bit of cash in it.

You could even look for an '80-early '83 Vanagon auto tranny. The wasserboxer auto trans supposedly also fits, with the added bonus of having lines in/out for an external ATF cooler. That would minimize the heat soak-back from the torque converter to the engine case & oil.

I'm guessing that is the 010 trany. I will look it up. Anyone want to trade a 091 side shift for a auto 010. Thanks.

you can't easily put an 010 in a 75 bus. linkage issues will make it hard.

Hey Scott I just spoke to a Mr. Transmission guy in Milton and he said that he has modified a 010 with heavy duty parts to beef it up. Stronger in other words. So is the 003 able to be upgraded to the heavy duty version. He is not sure until he sees it. He said if the guts are the same as the 010 then he will be able to strengthen it. Not sure if it needs it but maybe throw in a shift kit. lol.

the 003 is not the same as an 010, so anything you do to an 010 will probably not work on an 003 - i don't see any need to beef up either of them anyhow. they are very strong units. either of them can take about 200HP without difficulty. for instance the 003 has been used in VW drag cars for decades.

one thing you need to be careful about is making sure the seals are good between the transmission and final drive. it is common as they get older for the transmission to start leaking into the final drive. this will not be included with a typical rebuild since the final drive is not technically part of the transmission.

To rebuild the 003 auto final drive you need the following 5 seals:

Govenor 003 507 125 10X19X7mm German Supply

Pinion 003 519 085 30X42X7mm 2 req'd, use Timken 223010
from your FLAPS

Axle 018 409 399 45X60X8mm 2 req'd, Bus Depot, same as
the 010 final drive axle seals

there are also 4 metric o-rings that are hard to find. I reused my old ones.

Here is a picture of the over haul kit and the kit contains a governor seal and the large o ring that seals the trans to the final drive.

There are a couple of internal seals on the final drive that need to be replaced along with the torque converter seal, governor seal and the axle seals.
