My computer came with McAfee and Norton anti-virus. The McAfee works well, but the Norton will not make it's automatic updates. Other than that, it works OK, too.
They're both about to expire. I know there's tons of free stuff out there. I ran Adaware on my old computer. Are both the Norton and McAfee necessary? Are there better options?
I'd rather not spend hundreds on new programs, but I don't want to be under-protected either.

I don't like either McAfee or Norton. Just wait 'til you try and remove them and you'll see what I mean. I use AVG Free for virus scan and Adaware. Free and they work great Smile. Peace!

My laptop came with norton and xp a few years ago and it never worked right slowed a 2 gig cpu. down to a crawl froze up and never worked right so I deleated it. Same thing on a tower I had never worked right. I use what ever aol has and the xp firewall on my laptop seems to work fine. I use a free German one called Avira antivir personal on the tower last couple of years and never had a problem...

AVAST antivirus!!! This is my favorite antivirus and it is free!!! I have always hated Norton because it seems to slow computers to a crawl.
When I was in the Army and lived in the barracks, I was the resident "computer geek" so when people came to me with computer problems, I fixed 9 out of 10 by uninstalling Norton or McAfee and installing Avast and AdAware.

make sure your running physical and software firewalls and AVG.
i recommend Tiny personal firewall.

or you could just not use windows and not have to worry about it.

How do I uninstall the Norton? I can't seem to find a way to uninstal it on my computer. If I use "remove programs", that doesn't completely uninstall it...or does it?

Norton definitely puts multiple parts in the "Add/Remove Programs" list. 4 sounds right to me. Check for anything with Norton or Symantec in the list and remove those as well.

"Spybot search and destroy" has worked great for me.

It's free and about once a month, they update their library. Helps with the new bugs.

avg works well for being free. I use Trend micro as it catches most of the cooties. Norton and Mcafee are garbage.

How come everyone says McAfee & Norton suck? It's surprising to hear the #1 & #2 virus scan companies aren't very effective. I've also heard the same thing from the IT guys at my wife's company.

Hmmmmm,
I don't use any anti-virus software, or spyware software. I have never done a virus scan.
I never have problems with spyware, adware, or virus's.

Oh wait, I don't use Windows or a Mac. I use Linux. It is free and virus free.

Along those lines...

A laptop running a fully patched version of Microsoft's Vista operating system was the second and final machine to fall in a hacking contest that pitted the security of Windows, OS X and Ubuntu Linux. With both a Windows and Mac machine felled, only the Linux box remained standing following the three-day competition.

A Mac was the first to fall!

You are playing the odds. There just isn't as many linux hackers. That will go up with linux popularity.
