I bought a Bug a while back, which had an electrical fire on its first (and so far, only) drive home. The previous owner had connected the hot lead from the alternator to the NEGATIVE terminal on the battery... which melted the wiring harness from the alternator to the battery.
I've replaced the battery, alternator, and wiring harness, but I've run into a problem. As the previous harness was too melted to check color codes, I'm left with three wires and three places to conenct them - the alternator, the electric choke, and the coil. When I hook up the battery, should all three of these have 12V? Any useful advice on how to connect these?

i'm pretty sure the only lead that should be hot all the time is the alternator. the coil and choke should only get power after the key is on if i'm not mistaken. have you looked here?

Is the new harness using original color coding? If so what color are the wires that remain. |

The "new" harness is the old harness, with new wires spliced in to replace those damaged in the fire. I'm garageless in New England, where we've already had snow, so I went for the quicker fix (I removed and replaced the wiring harness on a couple of other VW's in the past, it's a painful process). The harness has been cut off at the back of the driver's seat, with new wires crimped in place, surrounded with expando braid and heatshrink to protect frm chafing in the future.
