I'm going to attempt a copy of the Rome Berlin Racer (Type 64) next year. Does anyone have a source any stats on that thing. Books, dimensions etc. I'm on the hunt and would appreciate any info.
Thanks

Chris Barber's book "Birth of the Beetle" has an entire chapter dedicated to the Type 64. It has alot of info on the development of the car and many nice pictures of it as well. _________________ 1957 Karmann Ghia

Is the body in the new Porsche museum a replica? This is then something you want to make too. _________________ Check out my Facebook page: Volkswagen Prototypes. |

The Berlin-Rome car in the new Porsche Museum is a complete copy based on old pictures Porsche had in their archive. It was made in a small coachbuild company which restores Dreamcars for Porsche and Mercedes. Please note this website which shows some pics how it was done:
http://www.karosseriebau-drescher.de/gb/portfolio.php
It has some different details to the surviving Original which belongs to a german collector and actually in exibition of the Hamburg Prototyp Museum.

Jeez
The only two books Amazon has are $1000 and $2,400.
Are there any other books that cost less than a car? |

Usually when Amazon says 1 or 2 months for delivery they mean they have no idea when. I see upon a second look that there is one avail for $43. Thanks.
Still looking for other info if anyone has any. |

There are many photos in a book I have, I will scan and upload them. Did you search the samba gallery here? people have posted a few.
This is very cool to hear, you should definately document the build when you start. Take a look at "otto mathe and his fetzenflieger" for some research I have been doing on a car I am going to build. It is further down the page here in the split beetle forum. _________________ drive your split. |

I was looking at the pictures of that last night. Very cool looking car. Are you going to try and do a copy? Sounds like we'll be going down a similar road. We should stay in touch. I'll PM you with my email and address.
Any photos would be greatly appreciated. Are you going to try to use 50 year old material once the frame and skin is done?
Cheers

I know youre looking for specs and stats, but many different photos can aid in getting the body proportions right...plus its just cool to look at.

There is only one original left in the world today.
Three cars were made in hand shaped aluminium by the bodywork company Reutter. One was destroyed early in World War II. The two remaining were used by the Porsche family. Eventually they only used one of them and put the other in storage. In May 1945 American troops discovered the one put in storage, cut the roof off and used it for joyriding for a few weeks until the engine gave up and it was scrapped. The last remaining Porsche 64 was owned by Ferry Porsche who had it restored by Battista Farina in 1947. In 1949 it was sold to the Austrian motorcycle racer Otto Mathé and with it he won the Alpine Rally in 1950. The last time he drove it in a race was at the Monterey Historic Races in Monterey, California, in 1982. _________________ '62 golfblau Typ 311 Limousine

I had a video of the 60K10 being driven, I cant find it now, but it sure didnt look like it was shot in the 80's. I believe it has been driven since.
does anyone know what all modifcations were made to the 1100 engine?

Thanks for the photos guys. There are a couple there I'd not seen before.
Yes there is a video floating around of it being driven. Looks like it was shot in the 80's or 90's. Maybe UTube.
Sled. Looks like 2 different cars in your photos. I'm assuming since there is only one left that the photos of the other are pre 1950. |

Just kills me that the original one had semaphores. In one of the old pics above, you can even see one flopping out a bit at speed...... _________________ John Henry

I do not know about the K45-240 car or the IIIA-0703 car. The T2222 is obviously the one that still exists. It is possible they just had some different plates installed at different times, but youre right there are some subtle body differences.
From what I have gathered in my fetzenflieger research, it is apparent the car had undergone MANY body modifications over its racing history. I am sure this is probably the case with the berlin-rom car (and its two sisters, even though they were short-lived)
the three 60K10's were built on stretched type 60 chassis, but it would be interesting to know what exactly was done as far as peformance enhancement. Sway bars? telescopic shocks?..?? I cant imagine driving a relatively stock type 60 at 95 mph like the 60K10 ran. _________________ drive your split. |

Help me out here. I'm a 356 guy. What is the type 60 chassis? I'm guessing very old VW. Is a type 60 chassis available today? If building a copy of the T2222 car would I want to do it on a 60 chassis or would there be something more appropriate? |

this is a type 60. It is "beetle" or KDF car as they were called before the beetle moniker. I highly doubt you will be able to find a type 60 chassis, let alone one someone would willingly sell you so it could get modified. Better chance of finding later pan and modifying it.
