Not much info on this conversion floating around, I know I could contact Joe personally about this, but thought I would post here for other people's input, and maybe stir up interest in this little known but very interesting conversion for those looking for a high-mileage, fairly bullet-proof alternative to the type IV.

I know the Wasser case has the waterjackets cut off, it utilizes the Wasser crank...but from there, what Type 1 parts are used, is Type 1 tin utilized, do Type 1 heads bolt right on etc. etc.
Thanks!

Besides a bunch of threads on other sites there are only a few on this over the years on this site. 26 hits for "oxyboxer" is what I get...

You need to re-locate the headstuds for 85.5.. ---> 94mm Type I cylinders and heads.

The cylinders usually must be turned on a lathe to establish deck-height. I also shrink-on and adapter for the case register.

No shims to establish deck-height or even on long strokes. Wink

The stroking process is the same as Type I.... much more room for stroke than Type IV.

Type I cam.....

Type IV style lifters stock.....

Type I lifters are needed for high-lift long duration cams. I re-bush the lifter bores, then machine them and hone them to fit. This is done with a fixture to establish true cam lobe to lifter offset. I do not just press in bushings and say "here you go".

Type I oil pump....

I drill and tap all oil galleys for pipe plugs.

Factory spin-on oil filter boss...

Type I tin, trimmed a bit to clear the case.

Can use Factory thermostat and directional vanes...

Type IV style flywheel attachment.... I also install 5 tough, but not glass hard (brittle) dowel pins. I manufacture these myself.

You can run std bug pressure plate with a conversion flywheel...

-Or 210, 215, 228mm pressure plate (type IV style).

I usually install six case-hardened and ground, bullet-nosed shuffle pins in all my conversions.... I manufacture these myself.

I usually include an oil cooler conversion piece that allows you to use a doghouse cooler... These require some outside plumbing (braided hoses) I manufacture these also.

I am currently working on a Type III style conversion for Type III owners and late model bus owners who want a better engine than the Type IV.

Type I - driving / Performance characteristics / price... With Type IV durability.

FAQ:

Power expectations.... The same as any other type I built with the same stroke, pistons, cam, heads.....

You are paying extra for durability, and longevity....The engine lives alot longer, and can be rebuilt usually without needing align boring.

Weight.... about 30 lbs more than a comparable Type I.

Price..... Expect to pay a more than a High-End Type I, but far less than a Type IV..... This is total cost once you are ready to install in the vehicle.

If you are on a tight budget, build a Type I.

- Joe

Or you could go completely bonkers like the scandinavians and build a 2.7 litre monster * Smile

With a monster budget to match of course

You can go 4.00" inch bore and slightly larger.

Roller cams....

Piston oil squirters...

valve-train oil squirters...

oil pressurized distributor drive bearing surfaces...

Dry sump oil systems...

Bring your wallet. Laughing

And pics in my gallery as well. The wasserboxer case is an excellent base for that "stroker you want to live forever" to "as wild as your mind can dream." Yes, the premium up front is a bit daunting, especially compared to the Brazilian aluminum cases, but 1) you are paying for quality, American machine work, whether that be Rocky's work or Joe's work, and 2) the quality and strength of a die-cast alu case is beyond anything cast in sand. I don't regret the investment I've made; it's been a fun project to say the least. If you've got the budget, or the discipline to save your money, do it!

4"+ bore with Type 1 heads?

With short rods, and the right cam, that engine would be the normally aspirated king-kong mac-daddy torque monster. 4" bore x 84 mm stroke= 2.7 L. Build it with Porsche-length rods, and you'd have the stump puller of all time.

Not yet. I don't have a camera mount inside the car...maybe one of these days I will.

So super stoked about this. What is the latest? Did the motors last and live up to expectation? Is type 5 joe still building blocks?

Yep. From 2007-2011, about 20k daily-driven miles, naturally aspirated and turbo'd, between Vegas, Maryland and Charleston. After 2011, car and engine saw a few street and race miles between various projects. Case is apart following Rocky's deep sump modifications, as I ditch the dry sump oiling and return to a wet sump. It has met all my expectations, but it just can't give me the 30 hour days I need to finish my (and everybody else's) projects.
