|
|
Anyone have a spare tire 205/70/15 in the clam shell on a steel wheel?
I've read ther threads about other sizes not fitting because of their size, but what about this one.
I don't really want to keep the 185/R14 as a spare and want to get a 15" steel passat wheel with the same Nokian tire as I have. Just don't want to spend the money if it will not fit in the clam shell. I have a 1987 2WD Westy if that helps make it fit better?
Thanks in advance!........Tim _________________ '15 Audi A3 Quattro

Haven't tried it with that size, but I doubt it'll work without modification -or- picking up a Van-Cafe oversize spare holder.
I know that with a 215-75-15 spare I still need to deflate it in order to make it fit in the oversized carrier, the clamshell would be impossible. _________________ '85 Westy |

I have a spare 215/70/15 using Van Cafe's tire carrier. No need to deflate or modify.
However, my spare tire has a conservative/flat tire thread design, all terrain tire threads stick out more than mine and might not fit. _________________ 1991 Westy auto w/ Peloquin TBD

Is it because of the width or the higths of your tire size? Do you have your spare on a steel wheel? _________________ '15 Audi A3 Quattro

The 215's are about half an inch wider than the 205's and the 75'are over an inch taller than the 70's.
I'm not to far off in terms of width, if I use a steel wheel and an under inflated tire. When compared to a 14" steel wheel with 185R14's, my tires are 2" taller and about half an inch wider. _________________ '15 Audi A3 Quattro

I should have clarified - it is a BFG AT tire on one of the Van-Cafe Mercedes replica wheels. The tire carcass is too wide, and the wheel JUST fits in terms of height.
That being said, there is still very little chance of stuffing a 205/70/15 tire into the stock clamshell without modification. They were designed to hold a much smaller tire than what you have. I know 2" taller and 1/2" wider doesn't sound like much, but VW didn't leave a lot of room to play with here. I would say go for it, and if it doesn't work out, then look at either modifying your clamshell (a handful of threads on that here) or ordering a Van Cafe oversize spare holder. It will certainly fit in the VC set-up. _________________ '85 Westy |

Why not keep the 185 spare? It's not the same as what you are running but it would be much better than the "donuts" a lot of cars came with in the 80's and 90's. Unless you are doing some serious offroading then it would make sense to carry the same size spare but for a short jaunt on a regular road or short run on a higway (slow down) to pick up a new tire you should be alright. _________________ 1987 Doka 1.9TD from Germany gasser DU tranny, fuel turned up, 1.6 LDA pin, boost at 15 psi,egt and boost gauges, stock diesel tach, air filter behind passenger tail light, IC to come

I just hate those 14" bike tires! Just wanted to be more uniform in the event I have a flat going to or coming back from camping. I guess it's more going to than coming back from. Don't want a flat to ruin a tripand those 14" tires just never felt right...if you know what I mean?
By the way nice truck! Rex _________________ '15 Audi A3 Quattro

Paul, do you know if the Syncos' clam shell is the same size as a 2wd? |
I think that the clamshells are the same but the coolant pipes above the tire are a little different. Don't know for sure though or if it will cause a problem so someone else will have to chime in.

I know what you mean about small wheels try carrying 1/3 cord of wood on back while towing a trailer with another half cord and a woodsplitter on them However I think I will keep the stock tire carrier even when I get some 15in wheels (that's just me)
Where are you in Maine, ever been down my way (back when we had a ferry)? _________________ 1987 Doka 1.9TD from Germany gasser DU tranny, fuel turned up, 1.6 LDA pin, boost at 15 psi,egt and boost gauges, stock diesel tach, air filter behind passenger tail light, IC to come

Bangor, not since I was a kid. My Grandfather came from Nova Scotia. Nice place, seems like home but still cold like here. _________________ '15 Audi A3 Quattro

I have a 215/75R15 BFG fully inflated in my clamshell that was modified based on a posting with photo's on this forum. It is a close fit and I want to modify it a little more but it can be done.

Modified clamshell holds a brand new BFG A/T KO size 215/75R15 at full inflation. This is a bigger tire than a 205/70. I suspect about 1/2" bigger but I've never measured. _________________

It sounds like the question has already been answered, but i have a 205/65R15 in the spare. The tighter fit is in the 205 direction, not the 65 direction. I did have to bend the clamshell to fit the shape of the alloy, but that was easy enough with a jack and the weight of the van.

I have 205/70/15 tyres on my SA steel rims and the fit perfectly into the shell for the spare. Stock '89 2.1 with no mods done. Factory sticker on the door states that 205/70/15 tyres were factory fitted. Hope this helps. _________________ '89 2.1 |
