Well here it guys my newest aquisition.....damn I need to stop getting more projects or nothings going to get done. lol. Anyhow I have been wanting a single cab for a really long time now. So after a bit of searching and waiting I found a decent looking, well priced and with minor rust. I have just recently moved up to reno and it was in Socal so it was time for a road trip. Me, my brother and 24hrs,1170 miles of caddy escalade(borrowed from the sister) towing a uhaul dolly. It was tiring but fun. got slightly lost tring to go through the mountains souht of gardnerville to avoid the I80 construction leaving reno. On the way back a cop pulled up next to me and told me via his loud speaker that I was in california and doing 75mph while towing a vw in the fast lane isnt so kosher there?? and I should be doing 55mph in the right hand lane. go figure Rolling Eyes so I did. We made it there and back in under 24hrs. The truck turned out to be a T4 rather than T1 I expceted but I have been wanting to build a T4 for a while. Plans are to build a "camper special"or slightly larger engine.I already have a temporary 1700 to bolt in. I like patina stuff so ill just do some minor repairs on larger rust and holes buff out the paint. It came with no gates but no biggie. not sure if originally had them?? the m code says it had a wooden deck of some type?? any info on this type of truck is appreciated. enough rambling we want pics.....enjoy.

Sweeeet!, I like it!
What makes you think it's type 4?, the M plate says 1600.

All 72+ busses have that, but the trans will be geared for a type 1 and have a short input shaft.

If the M-plate said wooden deck then it may have had the wide bed that was wooden and so were the gates. I have seen a photo around here somewhere with that setup on it.

Wow, what a rare gem you have found! Seriously. Cool Very little rust - the original paint looks good, and the interior is excellent. What is the country of origin?

I found a '78 DC, and it's not as in as good shape as this. But we have similar issues. Mine is Irish, which makes it RHD and some other unique "features", like no parking lights, and no vacuum brake assist.

To answer some questions... it would have come with gates, I believe. Used replacements will be essentially impossible to find, but a set of wonderful new ones can be had from KlassicFab for about $2000.

It also would have come with wooden slats in the bed, riveted through the bed. Mine did, too, but I opted to fill in all the rivet holes to make the bed watertight. You do NOT want water dripping down into that enclosed space. A new set of slats can be had for $$ -- visit Ratwell's pickup site for links and info.

As for the engine -- even though the engine cmpt is built to accept the T4 engine, VW outfitted these trucks with 1600 engines. But that's all gone. Your idea of putting a 1700 in it is a good one. The Camper Special idea is even better! But - it will take work. My bus was outfitted with a 2.0L FI GD engine, which is wonderful, but it required replacing the tank with the FI-enabled tank (outlet+return), electric fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator, and all the FI stuff of course, but it is a great retrofit! You might also keep your eyes out for a suitable transaxle.

But overall -- you have a great vehicle there. I am very impressed. This one is really worth fixing up, too. I expect that no matter what $$ you put into it, it will be a good investment. This is a rare vehicle, especially here in the US.

wow this is great i get more and more pm's and replys everyday!!! i dont know the country of origin but it says west germany on the tag but i assume that most of them say that in the vin/id tag inside the bus. i dont think i will try and find a new westy bed for it thou... as im kinda enjoying it minus the bed and gates right now. i may find a set of used gates sometime but im in no rush for them. i have also been tossing the idea of making slats and side gates kinda like you woulda seen on a old ford post bed....without modifying the factory sheet metal of course. im thinking 3 long 1"x3" planks of very hard wood stained in a dark medium color and 3 metal supports coming off the stock hinge localtion. just because i kinda blew al my cash for a while just getting the truck and a motor for it. im glad someone knew more about it than me. Very Happy hope you guys keep watching there will be some interesting updates along this trucks jorney while its in my possession. Laughing Cool can we say BBB here we come????

Interesting to see your shots of the firewall - seems that those holes are for extra cooling air? Mine are different but same concept I guess.

And my headliner is about perfect too; just needs some cleaning.

The rear window is cool and I'm glad mine's good. I think my defogger even works; ohm-meter checked out.

And no treasure chest access at all? That's interesting.

What is it about finding these trucks in the brush? I got one last fall its a 69 and I tryed to buy the very same SC in the late 70's. It took over 30 years to get it. I hope to have the refreshed drive train in it soon.

Not bad for 750.00 and I sold 400.00 worth of stuff that was in the bed so its down to 350.00 but I have spent that in replacement parts. L ove the color of yours combatbus.

Now that would be Verrrryyyyyyiiiinnterestiiinnggg Laughing to know if thay geared the 091 for a 1600 but I bet thay did so it could pull a load. If you plan on putting a 1600 type engine back in it combatbus I have one of the hard to get piece's of tin (there are 2 you will need) that you will need and will donate it to you (just cover shipping) I would like to see it put in such a cool SC. You will also need the odd (to us) air cleaner.

You would need tin like this, or they have a fiberglass conversion now.

Did you ever an engine put in it? I'm figuring "no" since you mention "no engine" in your ad.

This would be a great candidate for a 2.0-L FI engine (like the Camper Special you mention), though that would require switching out the fuel tank, too.
