So my shift lever snapped off at the base the other day:

I was miles from anywhere important (Kirkwood, CA) - looking forward to a couple days of rental cars and towing when one of my buddies had a brilliant idea:

The shift lever (mine, at least - the 14mm dia.) is hollow and the screwdriver wedged inside strongly enough that I could pull the assembly upwards to get into 1st-4th. (Since there's no spring to hold it up, it by default sat in the lower plane with reverse and granny.) This quick fix kept me shifting long enough to get to Reno and pick up a new-to-me shift lever.

If this ever happens to you (guys at the junkyard said it's fairly common) here's your solution. Smile

or you could hack off the screwdriver blade, slip the shifter back on and keep on going . . .
