Okay I know this is a Vw forum but I have gotten so much help in the past with my bugs that I thought I would throw this one out there. On top of driving 40 year old cars my work truck is 30 years old. I started with what I thought was solenoid problem and it seems to continue. I have replaced the solenoid (twice) had the starter rebuilt, battery is good and alternator is charging. The truck will crank fine for several days then all of a sudden when I try and start it the battery drags like it is dead. If I play with it long enough it will finally turn over and start. One time though it never did start and that is when all the other parts were replaced and checked. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Jeff Very Happy

you need to put a meter on it when it is dragging and see what it reads.
Battery cables? Bad cell in battery, bad starter. Have you load tested the battery? Check voltage going to solenoid and coming out

The only thing that has not been done is testing it when it is dragging. Never had a meter with me, but I do now Smile All the other test came up fine.
Thanks,
Jeff

Flooding and hydro locking, or timing too advanced.

check your battery cables for high resistance using the ohms function on your meter. your battery should read 12.66 volts.

12.56 Confused Starting to think it might be the timing issue. just strange that it doesn't do it all the time.
Very puzzled,

I found a problem with some ford starters, the ones that use a relay under the hood and some kinda mechanical switch thing on the starter. ( i don't know what ford calls it)

The bendix and gear wore into the housing, so the gear was going out too far and jamming into the teeth of the flywheel and damaging the starter too.
I went to the autoparts store and got a rebuilt starter, it had the same problem, so i took it apart and put a big washer on the end to make up for the wear

It worked fine after that

Check the ground strap between the engine and frame.

Latest on my F100. Many hours and several mechanics later. Turns out the fly wheel is warped. The fly wheel would be in a bind, starter would engauge but couldn't turn it past the spot it was binding in. This would cause the starter to pull too many amps and fuse the plates in the solenoid. This problem would happen randomly because it just depended where the warped spot in the fly wheel stopped when the truck was parked.
Thanks for all the input, no one on the ford forums ever responded Sad A lot more friendly people on this site !

BTDT with many other non VW forums, makes me appreciate the Samba and VW people more every day. Good to hear you got it beat even though it still sounds like work.
