It runs on 110 volts. You need to park where you can plug in. It has a little more capacity than our small vehicles need, about double.

Most units like that can't be tilted so you could not have it on a raised poptop.

I've seen pics of a Coleman like that shoehorned sideways into the fiberglass luggage rack...not pretty... _________________ 86 White Wolfsburg Westy Weekender

Jimmy buffet had a rooftop AC unit on his syncro away(rip). I don't think they would fit well on a westy but high top vehicles could have them no problem. _________________ 1984 Vanagon Westfalia Syncro Hightop

Think one could fit in the rack/cubby space above the driver seat?

We were just talking about this the other day. I think we are going to do a small honda generator (new ones are almost silent) with a window mounted unit that we set up and take down when we are stopped. Let me know what you come up with.

like this?
Non Westy slider window installed that opens wider. The 5000 btu isn't enough if it is 90+ in the sun. If the van is in the shade it works fine.

Jrobe, Did you add that heavy duty screen to the back of the AC? Great idea.

yea the problem is you need an inverter to run the a/c and they are so big that they wont fit on the front of the van roof. they would have to hang over the windshield or you would have to make a rack that allowed you to slide it forward so you could pop the top. not that hard to make a sliding rack but you have to find someway to get the cool air into the van roof with the a/c slid forward. works perfect with a/c slid back over the pop top and air going into the cab through a hole in the cab roof.
if you put the a/c on the roof rack on the back of the pop top it adds a lot of weight to the pop top around 70 lbs+
i decided to go with a portable unit and window tint and insulating shades. but i think you would still need at least a 10,000 btu unit.

High tops could use similar to what the vans like the Pleasureway use. Enclosed in the top. Look at these next time in a prking lot and inside has the controls.
In my opinion, I would have to be REALLY hot before mounting a home unit in the window. _________________ Live Fulltime in motorhome

last year right around this time, there was a long thread on park and plug air conditioners for the westy. I tried a couple of things, one of which was that portable ac that vents to the outside window. seemed like a great idea, but when the temperature was high, like 100 degrees, the compresser won't come on. it even said so in the manual. it dosen't have to be very hot outside for the inside of the van to be 100. we kept it and use it in a bedroom where it works very well. but not so well in a hot vehicle. the small window unit works much better. mine hangs in the front window of the westy. condensation drips off the back.

I've read lots of reviews on those portable units, most of which made me look elsewhere.
I have one of those small window units, just need to rig up the mount. _________________ Tim Potts
