So, I've been upgrading my wiring habits from the blue/red/yellow FLAPS connectors of yore..
Went to using these crimpers from a big box store,
but stripping the plastic off and using shrink-wrap.
If you look at the wiring samples here,
These are the ends that Wiring Works sell these days,
And they seem to match factory.
The key is that the insulation is strain-relieved by a crimp.
Apparently, there are crimpers that will do these types of ends:
(Big thanks to Telford)
Got a set of 990168 crimpers on the way from here:
https://www.delcity.net
Also got sent here for terminals:
https://www.digikey.com/products/en/connectors-int...ageSize=25
Egad! a LOT of options!
Anybody know what's right for our vehicles?
Like, matches, not just 'close enough' or 'works'?
I measure the terminal ends and it doesn't line up with the options.
I.e. spade measures .244" wide and .027" thick,
And it's not an option.
Am I missing some metric thing, or measuring wrong, or..?
Even more confusing is Rhode Island Wiring.
http://www.riwire.com/
"Lucas Blades" "GM Blades"?
Huh?
Plus, no strain relief?
Also,
The ends say they work for 14-18 AWG wire.
Is this the 1,5 or 0,5 etc. numbers shown on the diagram?
What works or overlaps?
If anyone could point me to the right termnals to duplicate the WW or factory ends,
i would be most grateful..
Many thanks. _________________ Bus Motor Build

Tin coated terminals might be more durable,
but brass is shiny!
Shiny!

If you are buying adjustable ratcheting crimpers....buy the Paladin/Greenlee crimper frames with replaceable dies. Also buy the Paladin dies as they are superior in wear and accuracy to just about anything on the market.
These three die sets will do everything in the car except the headlight flag terminal crimps. They make a specific die set for that.
So...die set 2033 is important. It will do all of the Main terminals in your fuse block, on your coil, power hook ups to relays and even a few of the larger EFI female terminal that hold two wires.
This one is in a Greenlee package. It looks like the machine work/casting is of lower quality...but I'm pretty sure its just the anti-rust surface and should clean up in a few uses.
This is 2096.It does about half of what 2033 does...but has sharper reliefs....and does other crimps that 2033 cannot. Thicker female terminals or larger wires to normal and EFI female terminals.
Some straight headlight terminals...not flag style headlight terminals. This one is "almost" optional...but I have found a lot of use for it.
This is 2097. Very important. You will only find a few uses for this...mostly fuel injection ...but nothing else will do. This crimp "D-sub" connectors...meaning digital sub-miniature...or many computer pins.
This does the small, narrow, single wire female connectors like for injectors, rear tail light and some of the female connectors inside of the steering column harness and in the brake light plugs and door light switches.
If you could only afford two die sets...I would say 2033 and 2097 would get 100% of it done.
This is just one of a zillion places you can find the Paladin 1300 series (this is 1302) for affordable. I just bought an extra one a month ago for about $30 on line.
https://www.altex.com/Paladin-1300-Series-Crimp-Frame-Only
The dies fit a whole range of paladin tools and a few more brands. Buy whatever ratcheting...ADJUSTABLE...must be adjustable pressure....crimper frame you want...but just be sure you can use Paladin/Greenlee dies.
Greenlee bought Paladin a few years back. Another Paladin owned company actually has made teh castings for a long time.
If money is tight...this basic crimper frame is both copied and produced by several companies.
Any of these are totally good but the Paladin is slightly better quality and fit. Greenlee is just about equal (they own Paladin) and Luna and Astro brands are also excellent copies.
Tempo communications...if you find tools made by them....are the company that actually manufactures the dies for Paladin/Greenlee
The Paladin crimper handle part # is PA-1302 (1300 series). It is also the same for Greenlee and Tempo.
This is a good overall look at what it is...also a good price...and B&H is the largest photo video dealer in the US...great service and very safe. You can visit the store in New York. I buy lots of stuff here.
You want to be careful to only buy the crimper handles in the 1300 series no matter the brand ...because there are MANY part numbers.
These part numbers describe not only a crimper handle with a set of dies you probably do not need for $40 more than you want to pay...some of them also are for crimpers that do not have the pressure adjustment wheel.
If the description says..."set at factory"and you do not see a small toothed wheel on the left side in the picture...its not what you want.

Why send it out? The original Hexavalent chrome I(chrome 6) for top sealing zinc...is factually not any better for basic items (unless you are going to sea with it)....than the newer non chrome 6 sealers.
Now if you REALLY like it shiny....and dead bang "no-rust".....and do not need that "gold" look from zinc top coats.....have them electroless zinc nickel plate them.
They will never rust or change or get chalky in your lifetime and they can be polished to near chrome level in a vibratory polisher.
Oh...and its more expensive....

Thanks for the crimper post Ray.
Its cadmium plating. Ray, I have no idea how that plating compares to what you suggested. My head hurts just looking at that table.

It’s poison,
And therefore outlawed in CA.
But protects better than zinc,
And shines up super pretty..
The stuff on that table is the leftovers after i put away everything i knew where it went..
Oh, and thanks for the info, Ray.
Trying to justify paying for pro Paladin crimpers.
Keep thinking of this.. Have gun will travel.

Steve - I have a can of Carnauba wax I can send your way if you run out of yours from frequently polishing that hardware. _________________

Good God, you have no idea - or maybe you do - how far this polish crazed man will go.
Im sure paste and polish donations will be accepted.
There isn't a way to polish the inside of bolts yet, but Steve is working on it I assure you _________________

Yes....its actually ZINC plating....with a cadmium coating. The common term is "cad plated"....but the "cadmium" is just a sacrificial protective layer for the zinc.
Cadmium itself...is a very weak poor plating.
But what most are looking for...for original stock finishes of plated parts is either that gold green looking (many colors) like you find on door lock strikers and on many brake cylinder parts....is called Zinc Chromate plating.
Others are expressed as cadmium plating. The vast majority of people who "think" they want cadmium plating are actually wanting zinc chromate plating. Virtually all of VW's hardware was zinc plated at a minimum.
The hexavalent chromium is mentioned...is NOT chrome plating. It is that top goldish green or pinkish gold color like I was talking about above.
Zinc is the worlds best anti-rust "sacrificial" plating. But...its starts its sacrificial oxidization minutes after its plated on. In short order...weeks or months....it gets that white dusty look to it. Thats fine...thats its job. Its supposed to oxidize so the steel/iron beneath does not rust.
Eventually though all of the zinc will oxidize away.....maybe years down the line...and the metal underneath will eventually start to rust. To slow this process down...and to improve the appearance....they coat the surface of zinc plate...with either cadmium or more often in the past...chromate.
The chromate...the gold/green stuff....acts like a plating for the zinc plating. Its called a passivate. The process is called passivation. It prevents for a long time...the sacrificial oxidization of the zinc. If air cannot reach the zinc...it will not begin to oxidize. The cad or chromate plating easily triples the anti-rust lifespan of zinc plated ferrous metals.
But...the active ingredient...until it was "largely" (but not totally) outlawed....was "hexavalent chrome" or "chrome 6".
Highly toxic carcinogen. A few plater's with a license still do it. Very expensive now.
But my point is that modern "passivates".....have come a long way and easily replace chrome 6 and have equal lifespan and effectiveness....for a fraction of the cost. Modern blends of Trivalent chrome can easily do the same thing for anything but maybe aerospace needs.
