Recently finished building my 2257 Type4 for my 914. On first start attempt the starter motor is unable to power through the compression stroke on each cylinder. With spark plugs removed the engine spins smooth, fast, and quiet. Checked compression and getting about 95psi per cylinder. I’m confused why the stock starter isn’t spinning that… Anyone out there have a similar issue with a new build?

Start at the beginning. How are the cables and connectors: tight, not corroded and not old with high resistance? How is the battery condition? If those are good maybe the starter is failing.
