Hi everyone,
It's been awhile since we've discussed original Westy side tents. I have an original Westfalia side tent from 1986 that I haven't seen on the forum yet and I wanted to document it for the archives.
It's similar to the circus tents I've had on Bay windows but the construction feels more durable.
Funky plastic side windows look like Andy Warhol painted cd's:
Screens on the front door and side windows:
Big passthrough into the Van:
The rainfly is thick vinyl and rests over the spikes on the poles:
Interesting details like loops for the ground stakes and clips for the rolled windows:
It's a big sucker and heavy. I would guesstimate that both canvas bags fully packed run 30 pounds or so.
Hope this post helps anyone researching original Westfalia accessories!

I doubt that I’d use a side tent but that one sure is pretty. The colors look like they’d go great with a assuan or merian brown vans. Looks good on your van with the orange stripe too. It looks new. _________________ - Jim

Guilty as charged.
Current: 1990 Westy Camper - Bostig RG4, 2wd, manual trans w/Peloquin, NAHT high-top, 280 ah LFP battery, 160 watts solar, Flash Silver, seam rust, bondo, etc., etc.
Past: 1985 Westy Camper - 1.9 wbx, 2wd, manual trans, Merian Brown, (sold after 17 years to Northwesty who converted it to a Syncro). |

I love that tent! I had an air-cooled Westy that came through my ownership after an engine fire. It had an original tent that was just like the Bay Window tents. It was in the same bags that you show with all the original stuff and it looked like new, with the exception of where it was burned. I passed it along to the buyer of my Split Panel van.
I dig them, but a bit bulky and overly complicated for my use. _________________ PM me about quality metal-work on your vehicle.
