Look into an intercom with built in sound system. Good head phones and it's good to go. |

We bought a thirty foot motorhome last year and practiced backing up in an empty parking lot. It involved a lot of shouting. It was not pretty.
Then I was wandering thru a swap meet and spotted it: A couple of sets of high end David Clark aircraft headphones. An idea popped into my head.
When it was all finished, I had two sets of headphones with a built in Bluetooth full duplex intercom. (Motorcycles) I even took them apart and Hydro Dipped the housings so they look new again. Total cost is under seventy five dollars including the Hydro Dipping.
No more shouting back and forth and we use them in the Rail too now. The ear cushions on these aircraft headphones is so much superior to the old stereo headphones from back in the day. It's no chore to wear them for hours. |

On the sand rail the only music I need is the sounds of mother nature as I pass by. That is why I changed the muffler to something whisper quiet (OK, I use it to hunt in the fall too), now the loudest parts of the car is the cooling fan and the tires on the gravel.
With the street Buggy, same deal at lower speeds but at highway speeds the wind noise is huge. I cannot imagine wanting to add to that din with a stereo! However, I like the idea of your headsets not just for communication with the Missus at speed but to protect what hearing I have left on long trips. The bikers do something similar but it is built into their helmets. _________________ Our cars get old, we get old but driving an old VW never gets old! |

Stereo, rail, you want to be like the idiot motorcycle riders that you can hear coming from a mile away and a mile after they have gone by.....THE whole world has to hear their music because of their loud exhaust and they are wearing a helmet without sound? _________________ “Fear The Government That Wants To Take Your Guns"

Personally i think music in a rail is sacrilege. just the way they are you get more feed back from the vehicle than a normal car, you see, feel, smell , and hear everything related to it and to tune out the sounds of the engine and every other sound with music only disconnects you from it.
But , im currently building a rail for the wife that will have a hell of a system in it and theres alot of options these days. So many side by side systems it’s ridiculous, not to mention marine applications, and yes motorcycles so that people hear you a mile away … all of which are waterproof.
Whats really nice is that a lot of them dont even need a head unit anymore and can just Bluetooth to your phone.
We looked through eBay and such but finally decided that we’ll just take it to a stereo shop and let them put one in. It’s not my thing and sometimes better to let someone else do what they do _________________ "how am i supposed to torque the rear wheel nut to 250 ft lbs??? " - clonebug
An interesting thing happens in forums where everyone starts parroting the same thing and "common knowledge" takes over.
Most experts aren't. |

Yeah yeah yeah what he said!!! Originally, my Rat Rod Trail Rail had loud mufflers. I replaced them with quieter ones. Now, at low speeds, it just burbles along quietly and allows us to sneak up on critters, illegal aliens, etc. until I stomp on it. Then it screams like some kind of demented demon. |

I wired these into our helmets, and my friends that ride all bought the same so we can link up. This lets us all communicate, listen to music together, listen to our own music, etc.

When driving on the street (no helmets), I put an ear plug in one ear and a BT ear bud in the other. If I'm not listening to music, then ear plugs in both ears. |

I bring a bluetooth Demerbox in my baja, it might work for you, burly case and waterproof. If you are going so fast you can't hear it, you probably couldn't hear anything. Just an idea.

A long time ago, in a land far, far away, I built an aluminum overhead console for Orange that housed the starter lock cylinder, toggles for all the lights and a single DIN opening for a radio. I put an old radio in there for awhile. I really just liked having all my switches above my head. That was the only good thing about it. I never used the radio. With all the wind and engine racket going on right behind me it had to be turned to so high that it didn't sound good and was just annoying. That and I'm conscience of other people's ears unlike a lit of people who think everyone hears their music and thinks it's as cool as they do. Don't get me wrong, I love a good sound system turned up with one of my favorite songs playing. But I don't open my windows so everyone else has to enjoy it too. And that's basically what you'd be doing with open air speakers in a buggy. It's fine in a baja, what's the difference between that and a regular car? Nothing.
I do think intercoms are handy. I have them for motorcycles when the wife and I ride together and it's been great. If I ever had passengers in my buggies I might think about them there too. Most units now have Bluetooth and can play music from a phone app while no one is talking. Pair those with some helmets (which really isnt a bad thing to have on either) or headsets and you can have plenty of fun with your tunes and people will see you going by with that big smile not being a nuicance and think,"damn that dude is one cool cat!"
To scream at the clouds a little more, I have to go off on a tangent and point out some of these guys that park their cars outside convenience stores with the engine still running so they can continue to let their "music" play loudly while they are inside the store. They are obviously very considerate young men and don't want to deprive people of hearing the end of the track. And the next, and the next. I've seen quite a few videos of these cars getting stolen while they do this and I think, wow, what an assinine urge to want to risk losing your vehicle because you think you look cool when you're really just annoying. I see it every day and it cracks me up.

I'll be thinking about the same thing in the future of my sand rail build. But for now, I have a 2020 BMW c650 GT Maxi-Scooter and they don't have any sound system available.
You can do a search for "Best Motorcycle Bluetooth Speakers" and you'll find the JBL and many more brand. Some have a couple hundred watts. They're all simple hook up.
I did some research and found that JBL Cruise speakers have Bluetooth and are waterproof. Although they are not as loud as some of the other bike speakers, they are loud enough for normal riding.
The Carpuride screen in the center is just $150 and it does either Android Auto and Apple Carplay. I have the 7", but they also make a 5". This works great with my iPhone 13 for GPS. I also stream XM through it for the speakers.
They could be mounted up high on the upper outboard corners of the windshield frame. They do NOT need to have the screen to operate. They work just like a Bluetooth portable speaker. Just a black and red wire to hook up. They have an on/off button along with the volume up/dwn and pause. They have the chrome housed ones like mine and then all black as well.

Just wear headphones. That way, you're not adding to the noise pollution in the wild areas with your choice of music. |

I am with the save it for your living room philosophy. If a big-bosomed lady with a Dutch accent tried to change my point of view I would be looking for a marine stereo solution from a boat shop _________________ 73 Beetle Baja, Ghia front brakes, Type 3 rear brakes, 2220 ( 94 X 80 ), Weber Progressive, Bosch SVDA, '97 Mustang seats

liquidrush,
Let me guess, you like playing loud music at the beach too...
Get a headset so nobody else has to listen. |

No, I'm not that guy. Not at all or even remotely close. Normally I use earbuds but then I can't hear traffic. I'm not blasting these things like a jackass, just some quiet music is all. I don't know what gave you all that idea to begin with. Anyway, I got a pair of pyle speaks from amazon that have a tuner built in for FM only, no AM. Bluetooth equipped as well. I've got a small pendant that gives me control and it's quite intuitive and handy. |

Hey liquidrush. You are absolutely correct. I made an assumption that you were "that guy" and dogged on you for it. Just because you have a sound system doesn't mean that you're a sound blaster. My apologies. |

Just for the record, I tried to only give my experience. I really hate sounding like I'm telling someone to do with their pride and joy. Will I judge you based on your choices? Absolutely! Do I care. Not really.
Wolfy, it takes a man to admit when he's wrong. Just don't let the wife/girlfriend hear you say it! +1 rep for Wolfy.
Liquid, I hope you figure out something and it works out for you. I love my tunes, too.
Are we done bashing people and their stereos, because I can always b!7@* some more... _________________ Brian H.
