I don't know if it's how they packed them to begin with or they've been carelessly re- packed... but NOS Metal Leve main bearings are often packed so the split bearing halves grind against themselves.

Good thing I have a few Kolbenshmidt split bearings. Woo hoo! It's an upgrade.

It all depends on the set. I've seen them packed in many different ways.

You should see the VW packed bearings that were made in Mexico. They were just thrown in the top together. I'm always amazed when I open them to inspect for damage before repacking them. I never saw a set that banged around enough to damage one another.

The Kolbenschmidt/Karl Schmidt has by far the best packing with the wax paper.

If it was just one set I'd call it a fluke, a one- off. I got a couple sets with the same annoying groove. It's as if they were carelessly packed and then got the ol' ten foot drop in the container during transport.

You're taking my words out of context. That was referring to the Mexico ones.

'The Brazil ones have been around a lot longer and more room for abuse. Some if them have the small unit in the middle that keeps them from banging around. Others do not.

You can turn the split bearing so the middle of the bearing is in the middle of the box. Then the backs of the bearing will press against one another.
