There literally was just a thread about the patently awful idea that is a pop-out rear window. I would dig it up for you, but it's such a completely terrible idea, I won't be complicit in the harming of any cars, or the passengers or engines contained therein.
(Seriously it's a bad, bad, bad idea.)

If you want to choke the passengers with exhaust fumes, and disrupt cooling air to the engine, there are quicker more cost efficient ways of accomplishing this.

I'm not talking about changing any of the cooling, venting or altering the main body structure in any way ... simply making a support for hinges to hang a frame from so you can replace the fixed rear glass ... the same way the deck lid hangs from below the rear window.

That's kinda cool!!!

i know someone that is going to make these. Wink

I used to play with beetles and buses back when I was a kid in the 70's ... Now all but one of my kids are gone (she's rarely home and will be off to K-State next year) I just turned 60 so maybe I'm wanting to relive my childhood, or maybe something to inspire me to get off the couch after I get home for work! I have a full auto and body shop at my disposal and have been thinking of using that benefit again.

I recently bought a 72 super beetle, that I initially wanted for the engine to put into a 62 rag top that needs a engine ... but I got it cleaned up and running and for what the guy wants for the 62 rag, I can fix this one up and have a daily driver on the cheap. Of course I one of those that can't leave well enough alone ... I can put a rag top on the 72 and have a lot left over for other mods like a 4" chop/low-rider ... or maybe a street baja. I haven't made up my mind yet.

There are so many possibilities that I couldn't afford back then it's mind boggling. Maybe my Google-fu is broken, but I've been looking for a kit for a pop out back window like this ... I know this one is split, which is what I'd like but an oval would be more practical ... and even if it's a nearly full size window I'd even settle for that, I just really like the concept.

Rolling Eyes Sorry for my first post being a response to a 13 year old thread that hasn't had a post for 7 years ...
Does anyone know if something like this is available?

Any help out there for a

I used the (above) split insert from Glass Action / Innovations In Fiberglass, on a Volksrod not too long ago. I looked it over before the install. If you cut off the "Split" vents, and rework the inner panel, add little more fiberglass to the lower area to build up a seal and lower window shelf area, I honestly think that insert could make a "pop out" version fairly easily.

That is my buddies 66'. Mine is the black one behind it. These were made by a company called Bughatch in the 80's. My buddy has 3 of them. 1 is for a pre 64 with the smaller window.

I'm a big opponent of attaching fiberglass to metal. You'll regret it. My wife's car has a Wizard kit installed by Wizard in the UK. It does have cracks where the fiberglass meets the steel. I hate it but she wouldn't sell it for anything. I remember a car in HotVWs that someone made a split out of quarter windows and utilized the existing vents. It looked better than a split graft IMO. I would also look at a rear window from an american car from the 30s or 40s. Try to do something different.
