Straps were for lifting the cross member so I could get the new 24" riser sections in, they were still about 2" short to clear the shock towers! |

Used your general dimensions and built mine. Couldn't find that big of a caster so I went with 5". I made my risers 2'. Rest is the same
Got some cleanup to do now so I can really get going _________________ 63 ghia coupe |

| Also keep in mind the wheels that are pictured in Bella's pictoral are pretty tall. I made a dolly recently but didn't realize (till now) that the body on the dolly wouldn't clear the shock towers, so I made my verticle peices 24 inches so I can roll the pan under the dolly, and will also make getting under the car for welding & repair that much easier. |

Something I found out about this wood dolly that others in the future may
want to know......I built mine in place on the car. It seems everyone was
building the frame and putting the body onto the dolly. But this is what I
did and it worked. Removed the front tires. drums/discs, motor/tranny
already out and horizontal 4x4's slid into place....then I lowered the pan
down instead of having to find others to help me lift the body. I was able
to do the whole thing by myself, except for a few minutes of holding the
long 4x4 with the dollies already bolted on. Clear as mud _________________ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3SLIzSCt_cg&list=FLIX26sGa8__1F1loczLPTtg&index=2 |

Just had my ghia on the ramp the floorpan both sides heater channels and cills are shot, also the front and back of the pan where it meets the body, the previous owner sold it on to me with a line of partial restoration needed an impulse buy off ebay!! what can I say, always wanted a ghia so, on closer inspection its all or nothing.I have a 68 bug auto stick as a daily driver so the ghia is going to get the works, I have never seperated a pan and body before so could do with a walk through on the process has anyone got time to give me a tutorial?
thanks

I made mine and put my Ghia on it last weekend.
Now I can get to working on the underside of the car again. Have a new heater channel to go in, and a new drivers rear fender to follow.

Worked Perfectly! So with some minimal help from my brave wife (quickly moving underneath the car to put the last 4x4 in place, we perfected the 2 person lift using a partially collapsible body dolly. looking at the pictures, it almost make me want to put hydraulics on the ghia! (almost, but not enough)
I used 30" uprights and 4" heavy duty casters, which gave lots of clearance.

| Great job. I like the idea of using wood. We all tend to think metal but wood does the trick and is easier to work with unless you cut it too short! Thanks for sharing and keep everyone updated! |

awesome idea... I'm going to make one this weekend w some slight tricked out mods. If you make on end detachable, you can raise the rear of the body and slide the dolly in, then raise the front of the body and attach the front of the dolly. I have drawings but no clue how to post them. This makes it possible to lift the body with one person, no problem!! Solidworks renderings attached... yes i am an engineer and a proud nerd!

Are 4X4 boards a requirement? It seems like you could use 2X4s in some areas. I would think the legs would need to be 4x4s, where as some of the sides may be 2X4s... As you can tell I am not a structural engineer...

This is an excellent thread. I am nearing a pan-off for my ghia, and this is very helpful.
My ghia's body is in reasonably good condition...no rot or cancer at the heater channels and only mild surface rust on the body. I have to replace a small section at the center rear bulkhead...near where the transmission cone is. other than that, it's pretty solid.
The floor is toast though...needs complete replacement. Oddly, this body has been off before. The body is a 69 on a 71 pan...many of the bolts securing the pan to the body were brand new...that is, where they decided to put a bolt...I think there were 2 holding the passenger side floor pan to the channel! none in the back by the shock towers, 3 in the back bulkhead connection...all came out with ease. the 4 bolts underneath the front bulk head were there, and loosened up fine...
I don't want to remove anything off the body I don't have to...such as the glass, etc. probably not a good idea, but my goal is to replace the floor boards, replace the entire brake system, inspect the body for unseen nastiness, hit everything with "rust bullet" or "POR-15" and get it back together quickly.
Anyway...to those that removed their Ghia bodies, what advice or step did you forget in the process, or any other "I would do it this way next time" information would you lend? I am planning to build the dolly today(very nice by the way.)
Also, I have new floor sections, painted the factory black. Obviously I want to cure these with rust proofing...should I blast the pans to get the paint off? What did you do?
Thanks!

Bella, that's awesome. I'm space deficient myself and your dolly just made the permanant file. Kudos. _________________ Oversteer is when the back of the car hits the wall... |

Here's the way not to do it........
Circular saw case as a floorjack extension.
I used the buckets to support the body so I could reposition the jack.
Thought I was home free.
Then the body fell onto the pan (wonder why)
Finally, with some help from a brick on the jack

I notice you have added a buildup to the cross member in the back. Why was that necessary and if it was necessary how much higher did you have to go so when I make mine I will just make the risers that high.
Now for a question in general.
What is the least amount of work needed to remove the body and can anyone give a quick step by step? 1) Remove XXX, 2) unbolt XXX, 3) disconnect XXX ......... N) Lift off body |
Leonard,
You have PM. |

| I plan on building the dolly based on the dimensions that Bella Ghia was nice enough to share in a few weeks. This will be used for my 68 Vert but we also have a 54 Oval that needs to come off the pan as well. Anyone know if the dimensions would be able to work for both? |
