A lot of the type in a bus is in a face called DIN 1451, for Deutsches Institut für Normung (German Institute for Standardization) which comes in varying 'schrifts', like the "engschrift" or "closely written" version that is on the speedo. |
I stumbled across this thread searching for font information on the speedometer and also found a font online called Steelfish which is very close to the late Bay speedometer. Best I can tell, only the number 1 is noticeably different. Unfortunately, substituting upper case I or lower case L for the number 1 skews the vertical alignment wrong and doesn't quite work when imported into Office. Course, there are ways around that.
I just Googled DIN 1451 and it seems many of the numbers don't match what's on the late Bay speedometer and clock or even the early Bay speedo images I can find online, but it is highly reminiscent of the various decals and such on the vehicle where letters are used. Didn't investigate too deeply as I was focused on matching the numbers used on the speedo.
Cheers.
ETA: looked closer at some of the other Steelfish numbers and they're noticeably different, a curve in the 7, a hanging tail in the cross piece of the 4, the tails of the 9 and 6 extend a little too long, the center of the three is a bit too low, and so forth. Still it's the closest example I could find in about an hour of looking and could potentially form a basis for a graphic designer. |
My standard font on my laptop is DIN Mittelschrift standard. I bought it 4 years ago and its perfect for technical writing....which is why its also the standard font for official and government documents in Germany.
The DIN 1451 is a fairly large family the "t" in Mittelschrift std is different than in plain DIN 1451.
I would bet if you look far enough through the family you may find what you need....or find that the parts are all there but in different "schrifts".
I "think" what you are looking for is the no longer used "early" version called "Breitschrift".....which the wiki article notes was used on auto license plates from 1956 to 1995......until it was replaced by a version called FE-Schrift.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/DIN_1451
FE-Schrift.... https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/FE-Schrift
The difference in the "1's" in items like stamped numbers or printed numbers on decals like for door jambs.....appears to me to be the type of change to the original Breitschrift of the kind a manufacturer would make to simplify a font for crude casting processes.....like filling in the slanted hook of the 1 to a straight line. WOW! I am looking for this for quite a while now! I know this thread is not really recent, but i want to try my luck...
Does anyone know where to get a custom made vw script like that?
I would love to order this badge with my own words! Has anyone got a link where to get one? _________________ Blog website:www.austrosplit.com

I was doing a search for something else and this thread came up. Reminded me - hey, I've got a 3d printer now.
So I gave it a shot.

I waterjet cut this one out of stainless and brazed studs to the back so I could fit it permanently. To do the same in production would require a fixture to weld stud-sert studs permanently. This gets to be a problem though with different designs.

Does anyone have the font for this style of script?
I want to print some decals for personal use.
I scanned through this thread but didn't come across anything, and I have also done a couple hours of google searching, coming up with nothing.
Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks in advance. |

I could still have anything made (here in WI) if needed. If the script/CAD is done, T&M wouldn't be pricey at all. |

Why don't you post the link to the font you found?

I don't have a link. I have the TTF file. I've sent it to several Sambanistas already. I'm happy to post the file for all - just tell me where and how I can put here on Samba. |
Please email it to me

I own CNC waterjet, laser, and plasma tables. A waterjet is much more expensive to run than a laser, and both are extremely accurate and comparable. Why not find someone to laser cut these instead and save $$$? |

Unless someone chimes in and makes me a liar, I'd say no since the ad was deleted.

Check out reesvaan's Samba ad for the poop on that. I'd not want to quote you a price for somebody else's product, so that he can change it as desired. He gave me a discount for two identical ones, too. _________________ John
