I'd put a lot of emphasis on "poor craftsmanship". There is nothing wrong with mounting a battery up front. The only negative aspect I can think of might be amperage loss due to the long cables, and that would be an ultra minor concern.

yes! the coil overs will raise it 2-4 inches!!... (depending on wieght) and as far as the weight issue goes.. it shouldnt be that big of a problem, but if it is, them just have a passenger with you.. the'y ballance it right out.. but DO NOT put a battery in front!... the idea is good, but a friend of a friend did that to try and get the car balenced so he could jump it... and heres what happened... he was off roading out in the dessert, and going over whoops havin a ball.. but not knouing that all that gas getting splashed around made a leak in a hose drip gas infron of his car, the gas ranr around on the inside, and created a small puddle.. then while jumping his car, the battery came loose and fell on it's side, making contact with ground... BOOOOM the hole front of his car was ingulfed in flames... the car survived.. but not only was it scary, but the entire wiring loom and all the heater plumbing had to be reinstalled..not to mention the towing bill to get a off road tow vehicle to take it to his house.. so the idea is nice, but be VERY careful!

The problem is; with the current setup, the torsion bars are toos strong. There's no weight up front; a spun aluminum gas tank and the one piece front. So the shocks aren't getting much use now. Getting coil overs and setting them loose probably wouldn't help. Is it possible to get lighter spring rate torsions? Or maybe I need to move some weight over the front. Maybe the battery and a spare tire?

Is the coil overs an alternative to getting some lift in the rear? Im looking for a couple of inches the easy way. I could cut my fiberglass fenders to clear what I need but dont really want to. The fenders I have are some older style I think because I have never seen any shaped like these and it curves way down. I was just wondering if the coild overs will give you that kind of lift by them selves with nothing else done.

i wouldnt take out the torsion bars, if you do.. then your going to need some MEGA strong shocks..like racing shocks, and their around 700 a pice.. no i would leave the torsion bars, and go buy some coilovers from jc whitney or your local bug store, there not that expensive, about 60 dollars a pair, and they fit perfectly right in the stock mounts.. there even ajustible, so you can leave them loose around town, and get a smothe ride, or tighten them up in about 5 min and it will not onlyraise it 2 1/2 or 3 inches, but it will make your ride stiffer so you dont bottom out on bumps

This is what I get for only posting when I'm at work Smile

According to the ad, the PO wasn't sure what he was doing with it; it was listed as a custom and/or drag car; you chose. He said he'd started on a turbo motor for it, but other things had come up. The wing is hand made and looks great. The paint needs work tho; digging under the decal this weekend shows some nice rust holes. Nothing too bad tho.

I didn't think the placement of the cooler was good but figured I'd ask. I'll be moving that as soon as I can figure out where to put it.

On the front end; whats a "good" coil spring set up? I don't mind keeping the torsions, but it seems they're way over sprung for the light weight.

Thanks for all the advice so far.

Just a thought...but how good can you see the cooler with it mounted over the air intake? Lets say it is absolutely possitively the best place to have it for cooling reasons ( which it aint) although it is pulling in all nice fresh cool air (which it aint) and doing the best job it can do, Whats to say it aint totally blocked with trash, leaves, etc, etc. I have seen several that were tucked away back there "out of sight and out of mind the motor starting knocking so he pulled the motor unsure of what went wrong and ended up scrapping the motor. He was selling off what parts he could to include a totally nasty blocked oil cooler. It may sound like a good place but whay take the chance. I have saw one mounted in the front bumper. Probably good air flow but opened to all the possibilities of getting punctured. Just my $.02 worth.

I think I will pipe in on this one as well...

If it is mounted on stand offs, far enough away to NOT affect the air temp, mounted on sheet metal, with the leverage of the weight of the cooler hanging way out, how strong is the mount for the rigors of off road abuse? My bet is the stand offs pull out of the sheet metal before the motor is well done (and both will happen)...

until you can back it up with data, it's just a story. still, i wouldn't be caught dead with an oil cooler in front of the fanshroud intake. run it stock, or do it right

can you back this up with gauge readings?

If there is so much "stand off" that it is not pulling in hot air...then it is not even cooling the oil with the fan (like you think it is). Either you are sucking hot air into the engine from the cooler or you're not. If not, there was no reason to put it there, if so...move it so it's not.

An oil cooler will heat up the entire cab of a beetle so you can hardly stand it (if it's inside)...They get HOT.

regardless, put the cooler somewhere else with an electric fan. your engine will thank you.

all off the cool air on the intake is not being forced through the oil cooler.
I could see a problem if the cooler was totally blocking the intake hole and all the air had to go across the cooler, but there is so much area for fresh air with the stand offs on the cooler that there is not a increase in the temp of the intake air.
