| Lemon juice and a toothbrush... amazing results on my VIN plate. Gotta say I'm kinda concerned about licencing my car after reading this post. I have a donor apron I need to put my VIN plate on and a non-matching pan. Wish me luck.... |

Jim.....I took my vin plate and made in Western Germany plate to a local metal finishing shop which does zinc plating....they tried twice to glass bead blast and clear zinc the two plates and they still have not turned out right....the bead blast does not appear uniform and the clear zinc has a spotty yellow color to it....the platers stated that is what clear zinc does unless you add chromate to it which then gives is a silvery blue color (does not appear to have that bare metel look anymore).
I was wondering if I could send them to you to have done since you have had 20 or so done with no problems and if so, how much?
Thanks...James _________________ 56 type 1 vert 54 type 1 vert |

I tried tumbling and it didn't work as well or as fast as a light glass bead blast.
Glass bead, clear zinc plate... works perfect every time. I have done at least 20 or so this way. Some really rusted and some not very bad, all came out great. Glass bead leaves a nice uniform satin finish for the clear zink.
I use an aircraft rivet set on an air hammer to put them back on. With the gas tank out it is easy to hold a "buck" (any chunk of metal, even a hammer works) behind the rivet and a quick shot with an air hammer and you're done. _________________ www.VWwerks.com |

| I don't actually have a VIN plate for my Oval. Its obvious that the car had a smash at some point and the plate must of perished. Anyone know somewhere where I can get a replacement? |

As long as you're taking photos for the future 'build' thread, I can handle the occasional 'teaser' pic
Good luck in getting it to The Classic. _________________ Cheers,

So is bead-blasting is bad or ok?
Guess it depends on the blaster huh? |

Here is mine before and after I soaked it in lemon juice for a day. I'm also gonna get mine plated like you did Russ. BTW all the "Made in Germany" tags I've seen have been silver like yours.
