So what are the pros and cons for just welding in the pivots into your old swing axle VS. Welding in the whole irs torsion bar in? Whats the best way to go? |

Sorry for thread jacking but I thought this would be a good place to ask.
I know you can cut the whole back end off an IRS Beetle and weld it on to another pan but can you cut off a bus back end and weld it to a bug pan? I know a guy cutting up a bus so I thought I could just do that. _________________ 1965 BAJA |

I currently have a swing axle which works fine but I am interested in converting to a IRS so.....
How much work is involved to do so?
Are there conversion kits out there?
How much would it cost me to do this conversion?
What are the advantages to an IRS over the swingaxle?
Thanks |
I have a great idea... bring it to my shop and i'll do the conversion for you. I have the jig and all the tools to do the job. |
How much would that cost? _________________ 64 Baja Bug |

A few years ago I tried to convert my rail from swing to irs with out using a jig and I messed it up. This spring I redid it with a jig from pacific customs, and it was it was worth ever dime I spent on the jig. Ya, I was $100 for the jig but it went in perfect on the first try. I couldn't be any happier. |

has anyone used this jig? i was going to make my own but if anyone has used this one succesfully it might be worth it just to buy them. looks like its just tack welded together but could be so it wouldnt expand and get missaligned from welding i was also woried about this problem when building mine.

This has since expired. He no longer has postings here. Does anyone know where to get one now? Do you absolutely need the jig to weld in the pivots? Not sure how I'd make one since I don't have an IRS pan handy. If I did, I wouldn't be converting my swing, I'd just use the IRS pan, lol. _________________ - Chris

Corvair vs. Corvette
Corv-ette... girls version?
(Smurf -- Smurf-ette? Cigar -- Cigar-ette?)
Corv-air... air-cooled Corvette?
What's a Corv anyway? Better just stick to the 'Dubs.
...but I'm not a Chevy guy. _________________ Sandrail project back on line... running now! |
