Update:
I just picked up the parts and there was in fact a gas tank in there. Rusty but solid with no dents. The bottom is also correct so I'll get this one cleaned up and installed soon. _________________ 57 Oval (with creative engineering)

I decided to just remove the top of the fuel pump to have a look........
Uckkk
Well, I cleaned it up and replaced the top. Still no fuel, hmmm.
Wait I had an idea (rare but hey let's go with it)...
I'll use the gas pump.... (an old fuel filter to keep out the grundge)
I used this to drain the tank earlier, now I connected it to the fuel line before the pump to flush and prime the line. I then connected it to the fuel line just before the carb. after connecting the pump of course, and primed the rest of the line and the pump. A little fuel in the carb. and she fired right up and stayed running.
Mission accomplished.
Now on to fixing the tank, I'm using a plastic gas can right now. _________________ 57 Oval (with creative engineering)

Thanks again guys. I have a manual so I'll have to look up how to preload the pushlever.
Gary, I'll try to stop by at some point. I won't be able to do the Litchfield show as I have another show (that my other local car club puts on) to go to.
I do look forward to meeting you and getting advice. I hope to have the car running shortly. _________________ 57 Oval (with creative engineering)

When you reassemble the fuel pump, you do have to preload the pushlever thing when putting the top back on. I have the instructions here somewhere if you (ssbn) don't have a Bentley manual. Just ask. |

The fuel pump rebuild is alot easier than rebuilding the carb actually, given the state of things just makes sense to rebuild the fuel pump. You'll want to clean it out yes but definitely replace the spring/bladder/gasket/etc. with the kits that are out there once you get it apart.
This spring we've been here 7 days a week basically full time and then some, one of the big reasons why I haven't been able to post much here. I'll also be at Litchfield on the 17th so we'll have to say hello then if you don't make it up before.

Thanks I was afraid someone would say that (rebuild). Can I just take it apart to clean it as I did with the carb? It was working great earlier, just before pulling the tank and cleaning the carb.
I will have to stop by sometime, when are you there, during the week or the weekend? _________________ 57 Oval (with creative engineering)

ssbn659, we're up here in Tyngsboro, just under a mile off of exit 34 off Rt. 3, actually only about 3 miles from John's house, so feel free to plan a trip up sometime. While I don't do general repairs on cars other than my own, can share how to do what you may need to do when you make it up. But yes you should be able to pull fuel out of a gas can, given whats in your carb bowl sounds like you could stand rebuilding the fuel pump, which is one of the easier DIY things to do, rebuild kits are available from most of the bigger parts suppliers like WW.

Alan:
Thank you for your offer. I had figured around 100 may 150. At this point I may do the tank myself, I will be picking up parts this weekend at the cape and I think there may be a tank there. If not I will be looking for one at least as a donor for the threaded section.
John: Thanks I really appreciate the support.
Brezelwerks: I didn't know you were in my area, where are you? I may have to find a way to stop by sometime (hopefully in my abortion, I mean car).
I bought it for my wife, she now hates it. I really like it even with it's problems. It will be fun once I get it going, pretty close now.
Now: here is what happens when you remove the fuel filter without realizing that the PO didn't have the fuel screen in the tank.
I cleaned the carb and put it back on, I have a fuel filter installed temporarily as I don't have the tank in.
Question: should the fuel pump be taken apart? Is it as easy as the carb? Should the pump be able to pull fuel from a gas can? I put a hose in the can connected to the fuel line to flush the lines but I don't get any gas. I did get a good jet of fuel into a bottle at the carb before pulling the tank.
Thanks again to ALL who have been helping me (and others). I just love this place. _________________ 57 Oval (with creative engineering)

Honestly have no issue with folks passing along my name, John likely feels the same, and besides we're both in the business, and we both enjoy helping others when we can, and especially the local folks too.
I probably have a half dozen oval and split tanks here each, believe all are clean, but half of them have Dehne fuel gauge sender holes in them since I often package them up in kits with the gauges we make. But feel free to contact me or perhaps stop over, check out the new shop, etc! We're closed down for the summer as usual, but we're still here playing catch up and working on new stuff, so we're here.

Well I'll say this. I have no problem with some one suggesting that someone else contact me, I'd do the same. I don't think that is anywhere near volunteering somebody for something, it isn't they signed me up for anything.
I know Gibbs, have met him many times in person, cool guy. But he obviously has some history and an ax to grind with Glenn. Personally I could care less. Have never met Glenn, perhaps will one day, but I got no problem with him either.
As for the original poster, I know his car well, let's say a bit too well . And I am STUNNED to find that somehting was MODIFIED on that car.... (not!). He is working through a lot of problems a bit at a time, I give him a lot of credit for that..... _________________ John Henry

ssbn659,
I was reading your very interesting thread and I know of a guy, a sign painter living in Philadelphia which you may know is in Pennsylvania. He is a sign painter who collects mostly old bus parts like those funny looking bumpers you used to see on commercial trucks, but may be able to help you with your fuel tank question if John Henry or Gary Constantine cannot. His name is Gibbs Conners. He is kind of a recluse, a hermit if you will, never leaves the house. He looks a bit like a cross between Ted Kaczinski and Jeff Spicoli. If he really likes you and you ask nicely, he may be willing to show you his "rising sun" tattoo. I'm not sure how to find him, though. If I can come up with a way to contact him, I'll post again later in this thread. |

ssbn659 is asking for help, and you're naming names. if that isn't clear enough, here is what you wrote in the other thread in the split forum 3 minutes after your post here where you named them

Where in my statement did I volunteer John or Gary's help? I merely suggested that he (ssbn659) attempt to contact either Gary or John as they live in the same vacinity of the country. You need to get off your stool and read a little better to understand what I wrote. Your loose interpretation of my words shows your ignorance of the English language.
As for your "word" that don't mean much either. For the past 5 years you've been proclaiming that I never rode for team Visual Perfection/Ducati in the 1998-2001 AMA Pro Thunder race series. Well, with you being a member of my fan club, I'm suprised you haven't been able to locate photos. So, I'll dig through my files and find one sometime today. What will it prove? I have no idea. But to some, it'll show your ignorance on a subject to which you have no knowledge of and show that you've been literally lying to anyone that was willing to listen to your useless banter. |

Hi, I'm out in Mass as well (western) but I think I have an extra tank or 2 if worse comes to worse with the one you've got there. The estimate you were quoted sounds awfully high for cleaning and boiling a gas tank. There's an old radiator shop here that boils them out and coats them, for around 100 I think (it's been a few years). If you need anything for your car, let me know!
