Just wanted to post up my 63. I have a 5 inch shockless beam from Sam at Valley autowerks, 2.5 drop spindles on drums. The fronts are 5.5 smoothies from JBugs with Conti 145/65R15. The rear is just a combination of inner and outer splines to get me where I wanted. Honestly I went up and down so many times I stopped counting and just worried more about degrees. The rears are 7 wide smoothies from US wheel. They have 4.25 backspacing and are pretty tight on the inside and may need to massage the body mount to clear when hitting bumps. I was hoping they would fill the fender a bit better. Stock swing plates with no notching. Tires are Ironman 205/60R15 and like I said they just clear the body mount.

Look at how the adjusters are oriented; they're about 90° different from one another. |

Rear

Want to go slightly wider in the rear and fill guards. May either widen a spare pair or purchase a set of 5.5s (however it seems they have more positive offset than stock?) Any ideas on what fits with long axles? |

Can anyone help? I really want to get my new wheels and tires on my bug |
195 is a wide tire for the front, that wouldt look good
i would take 165 max, even 145 is possible...
195 will touch the inner fenders...
I just bought spindels and some 5.5 rims.
The tires i gonne buy are:
front: 145/65
rear:165/80 |
Gday Wily, do you have any photos of your setup?
we just bought a stock 61 and was thinking of 2 1/2 inch spindles and same wheels, what tyre size worked for you? dont really want to start cutting beam for adjusters or getting a narrowed beam if we dont have too..
thanks. |

Greetings, I know this post requires pictures and descriptions on wheels, etc., but I have a basic question. I have a 65 VW bug with 67 transaxles (1 1/2" longer) . I am having custom Chromies made, so how deep can I go without the tires rubbing on the fenders. Additionally, how deep can I go in the front as well. Btw, the car is not lowered yet. Thank you! |

I am back from my weekend trip to Bavaria and the tall 16" highway gearing is amazing.....
The engine is a mid 1970s D factory 'Austausch', setup with old fan housing and stale air heaters. but contemporary 30 Solex and 1970s type distributor. engine is a bit tired but very reliable.
On country roads I was driving in the 70-100km/h range (ca. 45 to 60 mph).
I got 6.64 liters per 100 km, that's approx 35mpg.
Odometer and speedo readings are correct.

Love the wide whites. I like really low cars but not the rubber band tires or camber. |

To each their own, I guess. Many different routes to take.
Personally I totally dislike narrowed beams, small radial tires, widened deep dish rear wheels and slammed stance. Most all look broken to me and compromised in ride quality. Not hating on all of those you guys, just saying. I am on the other side.
4.50 Firestone and 6.50 Goodrich on 3.50-16 Barndoor bus wheels. dropped spindles. about 3/4 click in the rear. Rides perfectly smooth with added tall highway gearing with factory 4.375 and 1200.

3.5" beam and drop spindles
4" rear drop plates, limebug shocks
4.5 fuchs with 125s
6 fuchs with 215/70s (likely to go to a smaller tire as they do rub on big dips) _________________ TastyGarage |
