Based on my dealings Down Under, Vlad is the only one who actually buys/ships the VW parts he wants. Not that the USA is much better! Razz

Respect man. I'm sure your random act of kindness made his day.

Personally I think the wide 5 thin edge hub caps and thin slotted beauty rings with ribbon strip white walls are VW's best aesthetic wheel treatment. I also like early Beetle with the large logo caps and colour coded wheels with wide white walls but the Type 3 / Type 34 early caps and beauty rings are just that little bit better. I am biased though, being a type 3 owner.

This is the height of 60's vw wheel styling. IMO.

We're gonna have to write you up a checklist for the next time you go doin' something silly like that.

1. Is it shiny (y) (n).
2. Is it still in original vw packaging (y) (n)
3. Does the vw part # start with a 3 (y) (n)
(if you answered y to one or more questions notify TS type 3 forum members of your intent to relieve yourself of the parts in question.

Bonus question.
What would Tram do? (wwtd).

Yes Ataraxia already linked those 9 slot versions. It wouldn't bother me 8 slots or 9 but for the moment it will be nein because prices in euro's always seem cheap until you do the conversion and add shipping.

Yes all 4 are like that. The M is just basically the same 'x' with the bottom half trimmed to make way for the valve.

I fitted them on a rim today. They sit a fraction off the rim. I imagine they don't need to sit right on the rim around the edge since they hold from the center where the hub cap snap fits over it.

here's a pic to show the slight gap under the edge although it's still within the outer rim lip.

I have some beuty rings sitting here at my desk at work that I havent even taken home yet. They were crushed in the mail, the seller was kinda nasty about it, I havent even looked at them. Hold for pics...

On the cross lace rings, there are some differances, but I've found them to all fit on type 3 wheels. some of the others out types do not fit on type 3's, wheel is too shallow

The price for these in NOS condition is almost always, as you put it, on the sharp end.

There was a set on German eBay a few months ago that sold for around the same price.

Also these: http://www.aircooled-museum.com/achat-frese-trim-rings-20775.html

There are 9 slots in these-different from the set that Thom is selling-which have 8 slots.

Beauty rings: Everything I've found so far is banged up. Clearly not many people gave two hoots about using a hub cap puller. I'm trying to put together a mint set. Will see if I can fix what I have but some of the gouges are pretty deep. I like the spoke version too but the offset seems more like beetle. If they work I might use them while I work on the originals. I can see many, many, many hours work if I start trying to fix these old Pub ashtrays, I mean beauty rings.

Hub caps: I have the black logo and the no paint version from Aus sold vehicles.
At first they looks like different thicknesses but when I photographed them properly with a scale the variation is not noticeable.

I didn't get more than 1.5mm variation across all my caps so I am assuming all of mine are the 'very' flat versions.

More about these trim rings?
I've been keeping an eye out for some time but they are hard to find.
Are there any sources out there for these with the slim shaped slots?

At the risk of beating a dead horse further into the ground, and maybe because I’m a bit dense, but for my own clarity:

There are only 3 types of original flat five lug hubcaps out there.
1. Early t-3 62-63– thinnest edge-Innie logo
2. Early t3 64-65 – thicker edge - Innie logo
3. 66-67 T-1 Beetle /66 Ghia)- thickest edge -outie logo

So only two 5 lug T-3 caps were made and they were both innies, and only one 5 lug T1 flat cap was made and it was an outie.

Correct? Am I missing any? No T1 innies made?

the Correct Order is

1. Early t-3 62-63– thicker edge-Innie logo
2. Early t3 64-65 – thinnest edge - Innie logo (w / beauty rings)
3. 66-67 T-1 Beetle /66 Ghia)- thickest edge -outie logo

Thanks Pedro for that clarification. So its just those three types then.
