Oct '54 @ # 1-0722916 Heart shaped tail light discontinued in USA and Canada- now a double filament bulb; lens dark red plastic and curved outwards; previous lens made of violet red glass and flat.
Apr '55 @ # 1-0847967 Flashing wing mounted indicators optional extra for USA and Canada markets replacing semaphores.
May '55 @ # 1-0871207 All USA and Canada beetles equipped with flashing indicators; mounted by headlamps outside; (bullets) also Tail light increased in both size and appearance for USA and Canadian market cars. Lens taller creating more of an oval shape; lens beveled at edge- flat - made out of glass; bulbs signaled stop, turn, and tail light functions.
only thing they left out was the lights moved up on the fender when they switched to snowflakes. |
That was done in '57. |
No they did it when they mounted them on the 55's. Snowflakes were never mounted in the heart location.... |
Whoops, I miss read it . But VW did move the Snowflake taillights higher up on the fender again in '57 so they would be visible behind the bumpers' towel rails |
No they didn't Glen. They moved the flakes up for towel bars in late 55. The flakes stayed in the same location until they were replaced in 62. _________________ ITMC-El Presidente

Just found another '55 vert with bullets, flakes and over riders so it must be late '55; awaiting the VIN to verify.
And this one's never been apart, unlike the one I linked above |

I had a July 1, 1955 oval. It had snowflakes and bullets. The factory cert. says one of the options is large reflecters for tail lights. The speedo was also in mph. It was shipped July 4, to Japan. Does that mean other countries kept the eggs longer than the U.S. as standard? |
The eggs were US, Canadian and Guam only.
All others kept hearts through 55. So you probably had hearts that were optioned out of with the US configuration. _________________ Kevin "Wiggy"

I looked at the car today and it needs some serious help.
No paint is original, but the funniest part was the homemade vert W decklid wish I would have snapped a few pictures.
The car was represented to me as original and in Condition 2 here on Samba; it is a 4.6 at best

Care to point out what else (if anything) is incorrect in this picture?

If installed correctly, the fuel reserve lever should not be able to point in that direction |

That's the correct int mirror for a 1953-57 vert. The passenger visor is waay too large though |

Does that seem like Strato Silver on the dash?

Strato Silver is alot lighter than that. I doubt that is the original color of your car, looks like Indigo Blue or VW Blue. |
