i kinda like those Syro just enough room to stand up between seats, and some more air flow while camping. It kinda looks like the cut out for a sun roof. _________________ daily- 71 baywindow

This weekend another Syro interior bus surfaced at the Swedish Bussfest. This one had a high top.

Hello.
I have the David Eccles book Nigel mentions open in front of me. Page 117 covers the Syro Kit Campers & Conversions.
Apparently the company was based near Darmstadt in Germany and was generaly known for camping equipment and conversions. The name comes from Sybille & Rolph Koch, the founders. They did not only do VW conversion, Ford and Mercedes being amongst the others. Their offerings were either available in kit form or as new conversions. There were quite a lot of choices in interior because of this kit approach.
One thing they did make that was uber cool was a massive roof tent. That thing extends 5 feet either side of the bus. Amazing.
Good book by the way.

This is the bus i'm fixing up. Shes a 74 with the remains of a syro convertion, which may have looked like this
Is there anybody out there with a photo of this setup? The blueprints are very helpfully available online here http://picasaweb.google.com/mnibib/VWCamper# ( thankyou Morten Nielsen ) but I could really do with seeing a few photos so I can give the restoration a proper go . Current plan is to bodge up a close likeness for the minute to see how practical it is, although probably without the divisions above the engine bay. |

I just saw that Kieft n Klok seem to have a van up for sale that looks very similar to a Syro van. _________________ ----------(VW)----------

I managed to get hold of a Syro pop-top today. That will be perfect for my 74 since I have the Syro interrior but the cheaper version without the pop-top. I am waiting for it to get home now so I can start cutting it in.

Do you have any pictures of the interior of that pop top? |
Unfortunately no. It is not my bus and I only have two pictures of it. _________________ ----------(VW)----------

| After seeing the emblem on that pop-top I remembered seeing one here in Santa Cruz. It is considerably rusty. Not originally from California I would guess. I was told by the owner it is available, not for free of course. A thousand dollars seems too much for a non-running rust bucket. It does have a type 4 core. |

I believe the Syro campervan conversions are briefly featured in the former book title, which I borrowed sometime ago, on short-term loan, from my local public library. I have yet to see a copy of the latter book title. _________________ Regards.

That is such an amazing setup - wish the early bay westys were more like that with the all in one gig.
Also curious on the fridge - size, and if it was a 2 way or 3 way? Sure would beat the icebox, can't tell if it's the same as the fridge option they had over here or not in 74... |

I'm happy with my interior, but I'd love to have
that sink/fridge/stove. What years had those, or
are they just in the syro? _________________ SOME MORNINGS IT'S JUST NOT

The pop-top AND the interior are both Syro. I'm very content with the layout. The kitchen area is perfect with the top raised. The boards were with oak self-adhesive plastic laminate. I removed that using a hairdryer, as it was "boiling" in several areas due to the sun and heat through 30 years. New high quality plastic laminate is my next project, probably canadian maple.
Anaway the seating area would be nicer with two opposite benches. The small side bench is not suitable for tall danes, but you can't get it all...
To Syro history. I just got the book mentioned from Amazon. There is ONE page describing Syro. It was a german company named after SYbille and ROlf Koch founded early 70s, and discontinued in 1985. Kits for many campers in several layouts, some westy-like, all very functional. Syro published books to their kits. I found a link to one of the books here:

And for simplicity put a copy here:

Morten, do you know which brand of refrigerator the Syro interior used? _________________ ----------(VW)----------
