I was okay with it being just surface rust but it was getting worse. I tried motor oil, bar and chain oil, linseed oil, transmission oil to keep it from getting wore but nothing lasted. Figured I'd better paint it if I wanted to keep it. I wanted to paint it orange but couldn't find it in one gallon cans. I actually used ArmorCoat this time... even cheaper than Tremclad! _________________ Joey

Hmm thanks everyone!!! Does anyone know if the Dakota beige came in transporters too or just campers? All the pictures I see online are campers! |
AFAIK the campers were the only ones to be all DB. The transporters got the top DB and under the beltline they'd be another color. And the interior would be DB too. |

Can't imagine any reasonable person saying that your paint color would make your car not suitable for collector plates. Don't go out there and suggest that to some bureaucratic wacko though, as it might provide a life time of employment for him at your expense. |

Who's making the decision? If it is a government inspector they have no idea of what original colors are. OTOH, if it's some sort of collector's club who wants to limit who gets collector's plates they will pick at anything they can. |

I've never tried to get collector plates, do you have to have original color paint to get them there? You should probably pick up a little of the sand color and test it to be sure but it looks to be very close to mexico beige to me. I bet you could get by with it. |

No problem. Yeah, mexico beige and dakota beige are very similar. I've never compared the recreational white and almond in person but looking at it on google they seem to be pretty close, rw might be just a very slight bit lighter but it's hard to say. |

Thanks for the reply! Ya I almost feel like the sand looks like Mexico beige!
Do you think almond is similar to Canadian tremclad "recreational white"? |

Sorry to bring this post up from the dead

Love the rolling of trembled.
I had a question about rustoleum colours vs trembled (even tho it is the same company).
I can't seem to find ALMOND colour in trembled only rustoleum.
Is there a trembled colour that is very similar? SAND? Recreational White?
THANKS |
Rustoleum sand is somewhat similar but several shades darker than the almond. Have you tried purchasing some almond online and having it shipped to you? The sand color looks more like dakota beige to me, in fact I'm planning on getting some to compare it to my original (dakota beige) paint. |

I learned a way to transfer Rustoleum paint from a spray can to a glass jar.
Get a drinking straw that are the ones that are flexible and can bend. Then get the paint can nozzle and temporarily tape the straw to the opening on the nozzle. Once secure, get a hot glue gun and cover the nozzle with the glue so that you dont see any exposed tape.
Then get a glass jar and put plastic cling wrap over the top and then poke a hole thru the cling wrap and let the straw go inside the jar about an inch. Press the nozzle of the can and the paint will transfer into the jar with no leaks or mess. Plus, the paint is already thinned and is ready to apply.
The reason I did this was due to the fact that Rustoleum made my color, Harbor Blue, only in the spray form. Around 9-10 cans makes about one gallon of paint.
Here is my '67 Bug that I did yesterday with only one coat. The doors and quarter panels are going to be off-white. This is the first coat and it has not been wetsanded and buffed yet. Look at the gloss. I am very happy!

With all the welding I recently did on the body of my '79 panel I had to do a bit of painting when I was done. I had some of the paint left over from when I first painted it back in 2008. I started painting and noticed it was a lot darker than what was on the bus. I thought the paint was going bad or picking up rust from the can it was in. I said to hell with it and decided to just paint the whole bus again as I had plenty of paint. When I removed the license plate I realized the Tremclad had faded.... a lot...
I think next year I'll paint it red. _________________ Joey

It's getting like that here in BC too. Can't even buy lacquer car paint anymore. It's all urethane now. I think even the newer acrylic enamal car paints are now phased out by the gov.

Ya right. Just making it very difficult for the diyers.
I think after seeing how good rustoleum works that I will go this route when I paint mine.
Very cool thanks for the show.

YES to primer, especially if you're usin' different paint than previously or just aren't sure what the previous paint is... even still, I'd primer over the black... _________________ you can find me under a Dub...

Anyone have any experience with going to a light color over a darker color?
My bus currently has a coat of black rustoleum on the lower half, and i am thinking of going to the Almond white.
Not sure if there would be any benefit to doing a layer of primer first, or if I should just start laying on coats of the white. _________________ 1968 westy weekender

What about using an epoxy primer then using the rustoleum primer? Or POR-15 then rustoleum primer? |
Probably OK, but I'd try doing a sample first before I did a major panel of the car. If it wrinkles or otherwise messes up it is a bear to get clean. |
I used POR15 and Rustoleum primer on my window frames. It works good, just don't be in a hurry between coats. It will wrinkle. Use a few dust coats of primer let dry, light sand then primer coat. It came out very good. Then I rattle canned Rustoleum over that. |
