Umm, it varies by county, but the maximum rate in California is 9.25%, not 12% Los Angeles county pays 8.25%.
Illinois has the current high sales tax in the US with parts of Cook County assessing 11.5%. |

$1800 property taxes. We also have 6% sales tax in Iowa. and about 8% income tax.
In the PNW, they brag about no income tax, but the state has to get its money somewhere. So they have to charge high property taxes.

Here in Los Angeles ( San Fernando Valley, Ca) they collect 8.25% on every dollar. Depends what you are buying though.

When I bought the '61 rag I had no idea if anything was current on it. So, I took the pink into DMV, said I was "thinking about purchasing it" and asked if there would be any problem if I did. The lady got on the computer, and said it would be no problem. I knew the car hadn't been registered for years, as it had sat in a barn for a long time. I brought the pink back the next day and registered it, no problem. And no giant fee. I think it cost me like thirty bucks. _________________ Like us on Facebook! http://www.facebook.com/MotherLodeVWClub

YOU DO NOT HAVE TO PAY BACK FEES ON COLLECTOR CARS IN CA!
Sorry to shout, but sometimes it seems like people won't listen. All you have to do when you go to register the car is to simply say that you're a collector and request to have the back fees waived. You will probably have to fill out a Statement of Facts (REG 256) saying the above. Do NOT take no for an answer, it's the law. Sometimes you have to go up the food chain to a manager, but it is worth it. I have done this several times myself and it's saved me hundreds of dollars. |
i will give it a try. i typically go through AAA to get my reg done, so i will try there first. they seem more helpfull than the DMV. _________________ you have a cat and i have a dog that climbs trees |

Just wait 'til Ahhnold raises the car registrations from a few tens to a few hundred dollars per year!
Gee, wasn't raising the car tax what got the previous Gov shooed out, and Ahhnold in? Yup, but the state is broke by tens of BILLIONS and all such taxes and fees will be raised soon.
Get it up to date soon or it may cost you a whole lot more to do so. |

Classic plates in Idaho cost $33 to get into the program and it covers 3 years. Every three years they send you a renewal form just to make sure you still have the car. Return the form with $3.00 for another three years. _________________

You haven't heard of the Crofty amendment? It states that hereunto forthwith anyone with the user ID Crofty doesn't have to pay vehicle registration at all! You can trust me, just throw those pesky renewal notices in the trash! |
