|
|
Thanks to the OP for the tutorial...it was helpful.
Replaced both of the outside scrapers on my '74. If you're like me, you ordered the inside scrapers by mistake, and didn't discover this until both of your doors were in pieces all over your garage. I'm grave-digging this thread to inform one and all that inside scrapers can be reversed and used as outside scrapers. You'll have to grind off the rivets that hold the old scrapers to the aluminum trim, and carefully rivet the new ones in their stead. The bottom of the rubber doesn't quite go all the way to the bottom of the trim or the steel retainer, but it's good enough.
It's certain you'll bend the old aluminum trim in the process, so if you're going for a more non-battered look, you should just do the right thing and order the right parts!
A previous poster claimed to have done this process in an hour...I'd like to give a more realistic estimate of the time required. If you're replacing the window bracket rubber, cleaning and re-greasing the regulator, getting the vent-window catches functioning after years of non-use, and re-hanging the vapor barrier, count on 4-5 hours per door. This isn't a particularly easy or simple job even if you've done it before. _________________ 1989 Westy

Resurrecting this thread. I found it very helpful.
For me, the big time consumer was getting the screw that held the wing window out. I had to cut the head and drill out the thread. Ended up using a self tapping screw to replace the Phillips head bolt. _________________ 1970 Deluxe Sunroof Bay Brilliant Blue/Cloud White

After replacing the felt and scrapers my window is very difficult to roll up. Is this normal and can I do anything about it? |

Good tutorial. If you are going to use a screw driver around your door panels tape that off as well. One thing I learned from doing this in the past is that the new clips that come with the scrapers are not near as good as the OG ones. You can pull out the new spring clips from the new scrapers and use your old ones. They will hold better than the replacements. _________________ Never drive faster than your Angel can fly

I just did this while I installed the door seal kit from Bus Depot and this tutorial was super helpful. Thanks georgia beetle. I think there may be an extra step for early bay folks. When I was trying to remove the vent window on my '70 after step 11, I noticed there was a 10 mm bolt holding it in just to the rear of the window crank. I'm not sure if georgia beetle's bus has this but mine did. |

Are the outer scrapers only available with the integral chrome trim?
I'm trying to get rid of the chrome on my bus.
Thanks,
Jim |

I sure wish I had done this at the time I replaced the window regulator on one side and the vent window on the other. That was a real pain, and doing this would have been just a little bit more work at that point. Now I get to do it all over again some day. Not today. Or tomorrow... _________________ John

Yeah someone said that before but I like having the wiggle room with the window out. Hell I had to do it all over again. The vent window seals that I ordered back in October just go in and you have to basically pull all that stuff again. I recommend doing it all at the same time if yours are bad.
Nice to have it done though, huh? _________________ 71 Standard Beetle "Big Bird"

When I did mine, I dent the trim (cos I put that in last) but I scraped my paint with the sharp bottom edge of that blasted vent window. This is one job where it helps to have a good vocabulary of swear words. _________________ ---------

You are quite welcome. The first one took around and hour, that included taking pictures. The second, in real time with no documentation, 30min. Take you time and it's not that bad. _________________ 71 Standard Beetle "Big Bird"
