How can I forget AAtransaxle. Daryl got me all set up with higher third and fourth gear. Oiling plates and something he did with a plate in the main. It's new.
Everyone I have worked with on this van have been great people. Tom, Burley, Daryl, Mike at RMW, VC, GW, I know I am forgetting a few but Thanks to all for the support. |

Ok I have been busy on the van but working to much to pay for it. Got the new svx engine in it. Tom Shiels reworked the wire harness, Burley supplied the shortened oil pan. Replaced the coolant lines and radiator. Put in the old radiator fan. The Van Cafe big brakes are on the way with the GW lift springs. I have 16" mercedes wheels and waiting for the burley 930 cv kit.
It is running but not driving. I will post photos soon. Sorry for taking so long to post. I know Justin had a big following on this thread but it will be alive soon. |

Ryan,
Thanks for responding, and keeping the loop open.
I do not agree with you on the cause of failure. In my view, the aluminum scrap you found, would have been a natural result from the failure, but not its cause.
This thread has included a large cheer-leading section, as well as several experts on the subject. None have suggested a probable cause of the sad ending to this story.
I, myself came along after the final short happy drive had ended; even after the remains had been sold, after further financial losses associated with getting the van to Colorado.
Good on you Ryan, for taking up the story. It seems to my small mind that this failure was caused by lack of coolant flow at the head section. |

I bought it from Rubber Tramp. I am hoping to get the engine out next week. I have a new svx engine for the westy but am planning on getting in the old one to find out the problem. I did find a chunk of aluminum in the exhaust. I am thinking a valve seat was installed wrong. I will keep the update going. I have body work to do also. Been talking with Mike at RMW about the conversion and other parts I may need or want. Great guy. |

What a great read this thread has been. Sorry at the ending, but the lad had a great run there and has moved on to new interests. Life goes on. I hope this thread will remain on Samba, for it is full of information for those sill considering a conversion to EG33 engines.
Boy, I do wish the new owner would tune in with an answer to exactly what failed. |

I was getting so pumped reading this post. We just decided to do the Subaru Conversion in our 1956 VW Bus, and was learning a lot and thinking about doing it myself. I'm not as mechanically inclined as you, so now I think I'll take a step back and let the pro's do it.
Any of you guys know of a shop in or around Texas-OK-NM-LA (preferably Dallas) that does this?
Again RT...really sorry it went down like that. Hope all is well in CO

Hi everyone, greetings from Colorado!
I would like to give an update and a big thanks to everyone that has helped and followed me in this project.
I've decided to call this project final and give someone else the opportunity to finish. I have discovered new modes of travel that better suite my lifestyle and vanagon travel just doesn't interest me as much as before.

Wow - yeah that SUCKS dude. Sorry to hear it.
I second (or third...) the thought that this is something internal and not related to the cooling system. Good luck when you get back into it.
Just to make you not feel alone ->My hazardous conversion first flight story: I had a Batt+ wire at the starter ground on me on my maiden voyage. I made about 3mi before I started romping on it (couldn't hep it ) when I hit a large depression at an intersection in my 'hood with MUCH to much speed. Felt nearly airborne - then all was silent and DARK (engine cut off, no electrics), pulled over and saw a flikering light in my engine bay (cover was off for the initial running). I ran back with a fire extinguisher in hand to find the insulation on the Batt+ wire burning at the starter. I just blew it out. Re-routed wires the next day and all was ok (luckily!!)

Man that is horrible very sorry to here that!
I just don't understand why people don't use vac suction bleaders when they do ANYTHING with a cooling system! That is all i will use, if there is a leak it won't hold vac, and you won't get any air traped in the system... Well life goes on live and learn. _________________ 86 Syncro
