Slick mirror covers in the last shot. Care to elaborate on them? Would be great to keep the bugs off on a trip.

While Eric and I were in Germany the World Cup Soccor matches were being played in SA, and Germany was doing very well in the matches so there was a lot of pride being shown with the German flag. At many of the gas stations you could buy a large varity of products that had the flag on them, one of the items was the elastic cover for your side veiw mirrors on your car. We liked them and bought a few sets for a couple of Euros each and put a pair on the van in the photo.

The propane tank stays attached to the van during shipping, Germany uses the same type of tank filler we do, England, France, Italy each have there own type filler so you need to either buy adapters for each country you visit or hope that a bigger station might have an adaptor that you could use. The three gallon propane tank has never run out on me yet on my six week trips. that is with the fridge running all the time and cooking three meals a day. Shipping is by slow boat and about $3,500 or so.

That's 6 weeks on propane??

Damn, mine: fridge on+ cooking twice a day lasts 10 to 12 days. Think

Nice work on the panels!!

Shaun, very nice work. Two questions about shipping the Vanagon to Europe. I noticed the propane tank looks to still be attached. Do you need to remove it and is it useable in Europe? Also, how are you shipping it and about how much? I notice your location is in California.

can I ask what it costs to ship it?? am I right to say better economy over there you'll get a better dollar?? its sad to see it go, but Hell yeah what a trip!! European drivers license?? Am I hijacking? Sorry, I had my rear quarter replaced as well, But im not going to europe

The boat ride in a shared container is $1850.00 and takes 23 days on the water from Oakland to England. Once the van lands handling costs are about $900.00 that covers removing it from the ship and processing paper work and such. Since the van will be sold in the EU I have to pay taxes on the value of the van. That is 13% of the value and is about $700.00 The value of the van over there now with the current value of the English pound is about $17,000 If you remove the costs of shipping that is about $4,000 I am only getting $12,000 for the van. About the same as I would get for it here if you figure in for the salvage title that it has. My total costs on this van to buy it, fix it and ship it are about $12,000 this of course does factor in a wage for my 150 plus hours on the van. This really has never really been a money maker by any means but gives me a chance to spend a month or so in Europe and go to a few VW show there. The profit covers my costs to get to Europe and the cost to stay there . The simple math is: 150 hours of work=profit on van that cover the costs of visiting Europe= Left over money NONE Crying or Very sad

You are correct. What you don't know is that I gave Shaun a set of side cladding to install in this Westy. He slacked off and didn't put them on... Laughing

That is truly an impressive rebuild. Kudos for taking a Westy that was destined for the crusher, and giving it new life. The Vanagon gods will look down upon you favorably. And you to Stacy. Applause

I like t star Eric have seen this van from the day he bought it , to every step along the way ,even helping for a few hours at many points.
It is actually incredible the change this van has taken. not only was the body trashed ,the speedo face was broken ,the carpet was missing up front ,the interior panels were trashed ,the tent was destroyed and .... well you get the idea.
If you saw this van in person now,you would think someone took a cherry van and just had it painted. the nicest part of the project is that it was done to a high standard and there were no shortcuts taken and is actually much improved from new ,with the addition of P/W PD/L cruise and alloys.
This is one rebuilt wreck that anyone would be happy to own.

Uh, ya, why quote whole pages of photos? Just make your comment. I see this in thread after thread on here. Yup it costs dollars for thousands of reads, all those photos gets downloaded again, especially if you are cleaning out your cache diligently (the browser gets the photos from the samba again)
