You would have to measure and make sure it will get the wider pads in the narrow drum but most of the narrow drums have a little over 40mm of inside width. You will need new or freshly turned drums without ridges from 30mm pads. You will want to also check the lug bolt clearance as you will be running the shoes quite close to the inside face of the drum.
I will point out that if you choose to swap to older backing plates for 30mm shoes you will have to replace the wheel cylinders too. The step that rests against the backing plate is machined in a different location. With 30mm brakes there are 2 styles, '58-'64 and '65-'67. The backing plates, shoes, adjusters, and wheel cylinders are different for each style.
Some places sell adapter drums already made to fit the late brakes and give the wide 5 pattern. Another option is to use VW Thing drums, but they increase the track width around 20mm per side. _________________

old post but im trying to convert the rear of my 82bug to wide 5 and wanted to ask if anyone has used this type of spacers, they seem to solve all the clearance issues with the late pads and could be a direct install http://www.justkampers.com/4-stud-beetle-to-wide-5-drum-spacer-kit.html
best regards!

Front drums are a straight swap with '66-'67 drums as they were ball joint and wide 5.
For the rear, the wide 5 drum is thinner so you'll need to swap out all brake components (pads, springs, clips) with early model except you can keep your same wheel cylinders. Then because of the thinner drum you'll need to buy spacers (most vdub shops will have them or CIP1 online) to go in between the axle nut and the drum. Your done
Also for the rear, I think (please someone correct me if I'm wrong) you can use VW Thing rear drums as a straight swap because they're the same width as the 4-Lug...? |
all true, but to add to this - you can cut off 12-15mm from the 4 lug drum nipple to use as a spacer. it's even splined. works great! |
Or you can buy a ready-made spacer -

From this thread (good one with pics too)
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=244042&start=0
... the Thing rear drums are a straight swap (same shoes, backing plates, etc.) *BUT* will increase track width -- that is push the rear wheels out-- an additional 7/8" each side. |

I am wanting to change my'70 standard to accept wide 5 wheels. Can I just get wide 5 drums for the rear and disc brake rotors for the front? I have a pair of CB Performance drop spindles that I want to install also.
Do drop spindles require special rotors?
Thanks
