That was 83mm with a stock stroke crank. Heads are stock valve size with a set of the springs that I sell installed. I just finished and test fired this engines twin, but instead of 83mm I used some 40hp 77mm that I turned into dometops (I'm working on a new page for the website for that one, it'll be a step by step for a really simple engine combo). The chambers on the cylinder heads were cut at a .060 stepcut to accommodate the .040 deck on the pistons, compression was at 7.8/1. Exhaust ports were cleaned out and matchported to the gaskets and exhaust. The cam is a stage two cam that all the German boys like. I think I'll monkey with the gear offset to make the cam come on a little later. I started with a 120 main jet here when I gave the boys the car with a selection of different jets to take with. They wound up putting in a 130 which was way big for the altitude in Bonneville. The color on the valves is tan, it does look pinkish in the picture (on the 1-2 side). I changed to a 118 jet for the 5 mile ride home, some of the black was already starting to blow out. The engine I just started on will have the 72mm stroke x 82.5 bore.

Heads look a little black from the rich burn but otherwise in perfect shape. All the other parts look primo so I'll cut a good case and put it all back together with new rings. I may install it in my oval and run it as a daily driver to see how it lasts.

What bore are you running? What other head work is done?

Finally, yes finally, got the engine I ran last year at Bonneville out and apart to check to see how all the modifications worked. The oil passage mod worked great, no problems. That was increasing the main bearing oil holes from 6mm to 8mm with a reamer. The main oil passage was reamed out to 10mm. Bearings looked good both rod and main. The red coating you see is a baked on coat of glyptol. This case had some corrosion issues and the glyptol solved that by sealing it off and it also allows the oil to run down a little faster.

This was also a test engine for a combo case boring tool I picked up a while back, the tooling was spot on with no problems, I set the cutters for .020 over. I won't be offering any boring service for a while yet until I get more of a feel for this tooling. This boring set will do main tunnels for 36hp, 356 and 912 plus the regular 40hp-1600 cases. I've done plenty of main tunnels over the years with my other boring tools, but the set for this one was totally strange so hence the test engine. This tool also has a boring bar for cam tunnels which I converted to 36hp by making some special mandrels for it, and yes it can be done contrary to what others have said. I've cut a couple cam tunnels but have not had the time to fuss with it an make an engine up to see how it fares.

Pistons are what I expected to see, the car was running way fat when it was run on the salt, they even off roaded it when they got back and killed a gas shock on the rear that I have to change out. The last run on the salt it got over heated when the timing got adjusted to high and the rings look a little toasty.

Since the Vintage Forum also inlcudes 40hp based engines, here is the 40hp engined Formula V of Matt Guzowski. This car is road raced regularly and went 103 mph across the salt flats.

Todd Penn 'DROVE' his 60 Pick-Up 1700 miles one way from Saskatoon Canada, swapped the 1600cc S/P for the SS 36 engine he hauled down in the bed and set the standard for Stone Stock T2 36hp powered racers. The he swapped motors again, and drove home. Todd gets this years Iron Man award for the 36hp Challenge.

We had discussed not going to Bonneville this year because our engine was not ready. What a mistake that would have been! We hurriedly installed a WW Okrasa Kit on my original, well-worn 1958 engine and dragged the little beast up to that Great Place. After some issues with the linkage and jetting (thanks again Rick) the machine from the middle of the last century blasted to almost 71 mph! I'm still smiling.
The array of machinery, the smells of salt, petrol, high desert air all punctuated by the intermittent sounds of internal combustion engines basting across the whiteness made for a surreal scene. I repeated to myself, "I made it here, I made it."

Regards, Kim

Ian and Dave

First, thanx for sharing the great photo line-up of this years 36hp Challenge and World of Speed. Due to unplanned life events, I have not even gotten mine off the cards and into the puter yet. Hopefully this next week I will make progress.

Second, thanx for making all of the effort in such a short time to not only build the Ghia and outfit it with the new WW kit, but for coming out to the salt to experience what land speed racing and especially the Bonneville Salt Flats, is all about.

Third, thanx for loaning your extra tires to Matt with the Formula V. They made a three mile per hour difference in his maximum speed. I know he truly appreciated your kindness to a total stranger.

It was a great event and the cammeraderie felt by all of the Challengers really made the experience special. I hope you will consider rejoining us again, maybe even as early as next year.

May the Speed be with you..................

here's a link to all my pics, i tried to upload some videos but they wouldn't work so whatever...my friend sean and i built this ghia in 4 weeks which included a full front and rear suspension overhaul, new brakes, 36hp WW okrasa motor, bilstein shock install, battery relocation and cutoff switch with 2gauge through the tunnel with grommets at all locations, 3 point seat belt install, sandblasted and powdercoated rims, porsche 12v generator, and a fresh detail...the pics are out of order for some reason

I pulled the Bumpers on my Ghia when I had the 1500cc Okrasa in it and it made no noticeable difference. It was hotter in the day and I dropped 2 mph.

Does anyone know where any other pictures are? I would like to see some of the other cars and see what "aero" mods were done to some of the cars.

If anybody wants an inexpensive car to run for the 36hp challenge, here it is. I'm offering it for the same price I would have sold it for anyway, I just couldn't pull the stickers off, they look too cool. I did wash all the salt off though......
