Yes, come join the fun.

I love overnighting at Hollister. A 2WD van would be fine to camp in, and there are plenty of people you can ride with on the 4wd trails.

There are also several "green" trails that are fine for a 2WD, you can even drive up to the obstacle courses and watch the carnage from a safe vantage.

There are even parts of the obstacle courses that a 2wd van can do.

And Bill, thanks for letting us know that the seat belt did not lock up while the van was on its side.. was wondering..

Jon,
I pushed the red release button on the seatbelt, which yes, I was wearing. The six spoke wheels are the same specs as the seven spoke wheels, just different year. Mercedes C class 1998-2000.
I had meant to do the 6 spoke the same color as the 7, but I missed..... a $750 miss

actually, Bill blames the half inch lift he added to his rear springs for breaking axles, 2 at mogfest, and the one on truck hill.. Im guessing "ready for truck hill" means he has upgraded to 930CV's

haha - it's good to see that lifting means more than just springs applies to the vanagon like it does to Jeeps. I changed out most of my drivetrain when I lifted my Jeep!

Anyways, my real question is: Is there much to do out there in a 2wd van? I couldn't make it this year, but I want to attend the Rally next year.

> Off to Salton Sea tomorrow for Mogfest.

Have a great trip!

I hope your ribs heal quickly.

Maybe post here next time you want to go to up Truck Hill.. A bunch of us would like an excuse to go back to Hollister. I can bring a hand winch and Bush Anchor. Smile

So, were you riding without a seatbelt when the El Rolo happened? I keep wondering how you got the seatbelt to release..

Also interested in the old vs new wheel specs, and reason for change. (I like the color and 7 spoke pattern better)

Aleric, you told me about the tires
Mario, astute observation on the wheels, six spoke, lighter orange, the other ones were seven spoke.
Did a complete respray and all dents taken out, new and old.
Off to Salton Sea tomorrow for Mogfest. No offroading, my ribs are killing me where they hit the armrest in the roll over. Still have stock axles, the 930's are on my work bench (no time)

Wow that thing was fixed up quick! I must say that is impressive. I am glad it was just road rash on the syncro and a good story to tell. Cool

Since the parking brake was not an option, next best would be to have the passenger anchor the van to a bush.

I'm just glad the tip over did not roll.

Still wondering how Bill slipped out of his seatbelt without cutting it.

Yes brake line locks to all 4 wheels should work, since Bill managed to stop using his foot, just long enough for me to exit.

He was very calm, I had no idea of the intensity with which he was applying the brakes. But I could barely stand on the hill, it was steep enough where the van tipped that I started sliding myself, could not stand still on my own two feet at that spot. [/b]
