This '64 Sundial that is in my possession for over 10 years is still going strong. Attached are some photos from the last camping trips we have done. After a lot of different wheels (17" Fuchs, 15" Cosmics, etc.) it's now running on original 16" Porsche Fuchs with 195s and 225s, with 911 disc brakes and calipers up front, Airkewld BAD brakes in the rear. Custom trailer hitch to pull the slammed Airstream. Full camper interior in red leatherette and white piping, also in the Airstream. Up front there is a 4" narrowed and raised beam with custom trailing arms, massive tubs and notches. In the rear 3" stepped IRS arms, adjustable dampers with helper springs and massive tubs and notches as well. No airride.

I lost interest I suppose.. The first year of ownership I busted my balls on it and putting all kinds of hours into it and think I just burnt myself out. This last year I've done practically nothing with it. I got it registered about a month ago in hoped that it would motivate me to get some use out of it, but it didn't. I drove it once and it went back to its parking spot. I think I enjoy the hunt and the build more than actually utilizing it. I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out, and for being as low as it is, it drives incredibly smooth.
It just sold this morning. The new owner showed appreciation for the bumps and bruises the bus has and has led me to believe he will keep it as such.
This is the car I've held onto the longest though, 2 years. Haha
I'll be back one day when I hunt down another |
Your son will look at your avatar picture some day in the future and curse you for letting it go and then we'll see a new thread called "Looking to find my old man's bus, does anyone know where it is?" _________________ '67 Beetle

Awesome job Dan.
Looks great. Shit is SLAMMED!
Best thing I did bleeding wise was a simple gravity bleed.
Raise the front up and crack the furthest valve and put a tight tube on the valve into a can then let it sit for a few hours. Checking the fluid in the reserve often. It may take longer to fully bleed out but this has worked best for me. |

I wish I could've helped out earlier in the week... but I have Life working against me too.... all apologies, my VW brethren .
BTW: How'd you 'bench-bleed' the master cyl? If done correctly, you could've solved your own "squishy-ness" on your master cylinder.... before you posted this problem, brother-bear.
Just a thought... |
I didn't bench bleed the master cylinder.. I didn't know I had too.. Whoops..

The rear two yes, front are discs. |
Dan-You do know the fronts need to be bled also, even though they are discs, right? That may explain some of the squishyness. The bleaders on those need to be as high as possible also.
And what is with the test drive? There were absolutely NO sparks or gouges in the asphalt. And you just cruised into your driveway. I thought you were going to slam that thang. |
I bled the front as well, just the top bleeder valve on one calliper was snapped off.. So instead of trying to spend all day getting that bleeder out, I removed the calliper, flipped it upside down to bleed it, then bolted it back on.. That was made my pedal go from hitting the floor, to having pressure.. Still didn't have complete stopping power though.. hmm..
And the test drive did goudge the driveway.. I just removed all the sound because all you could hear was the noisey electric fuel pump.
The ride around the block was WAYYYY smoother than I was expecting.. plenty of suspension travel and it is nice and soft, like I'm floating..
