Well.....after a lot of years doing nothing with it, and even considering selling it, I finally decided to start rebuilding it. I bought the 51 body that was actually sitting on the chassis,when I bought it. I Got it sandblasted and primed. And now I have almost finished welding and changing the body to look like a 1943 model. Plan is to have it painted by next summer, and on the road for the 2022 season.

I had to laugh when I read this. Go for it.
I also like to work with brass era cars which are pre-1916 cars. They are just amazing. People will find frames and a body number and recreate the entire car and it is considered the "real thing". Sometimes selling for millions.
I certainly like old VWs. When you think about it though, 1943 is not old in terms of autos. The war is what made survival such a challenge for early VWs cars as did the economic conditions that followed.
Complete original cars are precious. They allow those with parts like in this thread to recreate the original so others can enjoy it. While "not a car" in the absolute sense, it is a way to preserve the mark. _________________ http://karmannghias.org/

Hi Dave.
If you check out this blog you find some pictures of the KDF parts. Most of the parts I have bought are repro, but a few old ones.
Jacek at ww2vw.com, kaefer-nostalgie, kdf osnice, sam steel and kdf service have all contributed to bankrupt me

Yes, and no......

Lots of people burried cars to get rid of them.

Yes, and no......

I'm curious, why do people bury Volkswagens in Norway ?
Why am I the only one that asks this question ?

The authenticity of the tunnel, the number and the identity f the car is absolutely certain and for sure.
On both the Type 60 (Prefix “1”) and the Type 51/82E (Prefix “5”), the number tag sits behind the shifter for all wartime years. This is sort of odd, since all Kubelwagens/Type82s (Prefix “2”) from the same years – have the tag in front of the shifter. As you see from the pictures – most loose parts have been swapped for later at some point in time – but loose parts can be sourced or made. The tunnel carries the “soul” of the car itself.
So – back to the history of -1-01996X-:
Right before Christmas last year the identity and authenticity had been verified and both the hunt for more history – and – a “persuasive period” was started. The farmer had found the partially blasted ’51 Split body on an abandoned airfield in the Norwegian mountains back in the mid-80ies. The original Split-pan came with the empty shell and this was hauled home and dropped in his barn.
A few years later, a neighbour told him about an older guy that used to be into Beetles and all he had left was a “perfectly restored” old chassis for a Splitwindow in his barn. The farmer picked up the “house-paint”-painted grey chassis for next to nothing and saw it as a perfect and easy start of the restoration of his blue Split Beetle. The ’51 pan was thrown outside the barn, and the body put on top of the “restored” chassis.
Then it sat……and sat….until we found it. But the farmer had dreams for the ’51…and with a restored chassis, the restoration was going to be a piece of cake he thought. So – it was not for sale. Not even for trade against a fully restored driving ’51 chassis that would fit the blue shell much better.... |
Hello. If its so that VW factory did restored lots of cars in 1949, is it so that might be the case on my 1949 std.VW, because I got some Kdf parts on it? |

A few kilometers from where I live theres a bunch of old cars buried, many of those are old VW`s..
I don`t know exactly when they buried them, but it`s been at least 15 years.
My memory may be a bit of, but I`m shure there where at least one split.
To be honest, I hate myself for not trying to buy some of them back then
Most of the cars where kinda good the last time I was there stealing parts for my now dead `65

The value of the remains is not really important, surely in this context its the emotional value and the age/worth of the body is a plus?
I know where there are 2 early (well oval but nothing like this) cars buried by a farmer not too far from my brothers place. I'm never gonna dig them up. But if it was my fathers old bug, I'd be there like a shot.
