Hello Augie.
thank you for the kind words. To answer your question, I just pie cut it into shape the welded it and ground it down. to some work to form it to the stock pan rails. I too had a thing unfortunately sold it . planned on doing the thing body lift with rectangular tube for a body lift. |

nice build, I love the way Baja's look with paddle tires.
ive center mounted a few vw steering boxes which is an improvement over it being in the factory location but not by much, and especially not if you have much of anything over stock travel.
the first build that really showed me was one I built a set of A arms for, had 16" of travel so it really exaggerated the issues. problem was the arc the steering box arm traveled in, if id have used a center load R&P im positive it would've improved the bump steer at least 90%. the arc that the arm travels in also caused other issues with angles too that the center load would've evened out. I ended up selling as it was, which was fine by me. I learned a lot from that build.
I would imagine the center pivot like what's on a bus would be about the same as center mounting the steering box. _________________ "how am i supposed to torque the rear wheel nut to 250 ft lbs??? " - clonebug

Steve is right that an end load rack was your problem before and would have been fixed with an end load. That would have potentially reduced bump steer toe change to about 1/4" in 15" of travel.
Ackerman should not change between center pivot as you set up and a center load rack or a center mount Saginaw or similar. More important for Ackerman is the spindle steering arms. For proper Ackerman effect, a line from the center of the kingpin line contact point on the ground at ride height on each side, to the center of the rear axle line (straight line through the center of the 2 rear wheels), should intersect a vertical line through each outer tie rod end. _________________ Richard

Great build. Post some updates!
On your initial rack steering issues, did you consider a center load rack instead of end load? That moves both tie rods to the center on the rack sort of like your bus style drag link. |

I'd hate to dig up an old thread from the grave, but I'm just reading up on everyone's build (gone through about three so far...my eyes are bleeding)....and I LOVE your work. You and KrAzYBaJa are my inspirations. I have no bug yet, currently trying to scheme on one (i have schnit to trade with, but no one in my town has anything),and am hoping to follow both your build style and KBs.
I haz question doe.
What ever became of your steering setup? I mean, the very last post from you mention using a chevy steering pivot (?) and somehow grafting power steering? How did you,or how were you gonna do it? Please let me know. I have my cage,my suspension, and some other things planned out. If I can do it cheaply,I'm going to try to go a-arm suspension. But if I can,I'll go beam and want to copy something like yours. Thanks. Awesome work my friend. |

Hey JKZ, I started a thread some time ago on steering set ups with stock components, and I am wondering, would you mind me throwing a couple pictures of your front end set up in there? |
Hello Vanapplebomb.. No I would not mind at all .Thanks for asking..Maybe Someone could explain to me why the rack set up doesn't create steering ackerman..I know it does a good job at eliminating bump steer.
I will be sure to check out your thread... |

Hey, I was just wondering about your Baja the other day! I see you shit-canned that rack and you're using a stock steering box! That's why I'm a stock nerd and love these old cars just the way they are. Good to see your driving it and having fun. |
Hey Longrifle.. yes I did go back to the stock steering box with a vw bus set up of my own creation...I have the steering ackerman I wanted and a 1/2 of of toe out at full droop and full compression.. At it works great thru the big whoops and on loose dirt and pavement. the steering wheel doesnt fight me and it goes in the direction I point it, and does make the car real easy to control slides (drifting)..My plans later on are to go to a chevy truck box center mount insted of my center piviot. Pwr steering would be nice. |

So about the only thing i have done to my baja since its been together..Is try and drive it as much as possible and I did have it weighed..So here the results of the weigh in ..with me In the car and a full fuel tank of fuel(15Gal) it
came out to be around 2066lbs. with me out of the car just under 1900lbs.
the front had about 700lbs and the rear had 1200lbs .
I was hopin for better weight distribution.. but while drivin the car it feels
fairly flat ..
I did take it on some fire roads a couple wknds back chasin my friends on their dual sport bikes..That was fun ..Could slide the car around the corners with no issues...the steering really works..
