Hello,
I know it has been a while seen you posted your message but I'm attempting to replace the exact same rotten parts on my 55' microbus. I just have a question regarding your first picture. When you did fit the small panel, it seems you used a kind of hold bracket with a butterfly nut. What's the name of that tool ?
Thanks

That's exactly what I used.....they will give you a nice even gap. |
I'm doing my long now. I can't use those clamps... my seam falls right in the middle of the horizontal support. Not sure how yours didn't. Looks like yours did. I guess the good aspect with mine is that I have a natural place to attach my new rocker so close to where the seam will be. _________________ Looking for a correct 1967 rear seat

Jumping back to the original thread subject..."Short Side Rocker Replacement", I'm getting ready to do mine, and I bought a 14" rocker from Gerson that goes up to the first horizontal support. I only need to go about as high as you did, but have been thinking about going up to the horizontal support for...well...support. I figured it would keep the seam straighter. But after looking at how nicely yours turned out, I may cut my new piece shorter and not have the hassle of removing the door, cutting out more OG metal than is needed etc. Like to get some feedback from ya'll before I start. _________________ Looking for a correct 1967 rear seat

Decided to try my luck taking the bus up a pretty rough mountain road to check out some old mining claims.
My 1600 SP made it up but unfortunately it really struggled due to the steep grade and rocks. It forced me to ride my clutch too much. By the time we got to the top I could smell something burning and I could barely get the bus to move. I adjusted the clutch cable which helped a little and was able to limp back to my brother in laws garage. I tried some more adjusting with no luck. After consulting some VW experts (Yoger and Eric&Barb), decided to pull the engine and here's what I found:
One smoked clutch...
Had a great place to work with access to lots of tools.
Luckily, Painters Griding in Denver was still open for parts.
About 5 hours later, everything was put back and the bus drove better than ever.
Heading through the continental divide tunnel on I70...
Drove about 950 miles home on Thursday to wrap up my trip of about 2300 total round trip. |

So about 3 days before this trip I decided to pull the engine to address some pesky transaxle and engine leaks. I wasn't sure I'd get everything all put back together in time but it worked out.
Here it is all put back together with a new 2.5 oil sump added.
Loaded up and ready. Pulled out the middle seat for more room.
Entertainment center
Lunch stop along Hwy 50 somewhere west of Herman, MO
Camped at Cheney State Park, KS
Windy as hell in Kansas..at a rest stop west of Dodge City, KS off Hwy 50.
Here's a hitch-hiker I picked up
Finally some mountains
I'm currently in Silverthorne, CO. The drive from Salida to here was interesting. My 1600 SP could only hold about 25mph up and over Fremont Pass. Second gear pretty much the whole way up. |

Just started my first road trip. Left Troy, IL on Thursday and put in about 550 miles. Ended up in cheney, ks. Today another 450 and currently camping at Pueblo Lake state park in Colorado. Heading to Salida tomorrow for fibark to raft and then to Crested Butte on Sunday. Lots of pictures and details to follow..... |

Great thread for a scared new welder like myself...just learned how to weld yesterday. When you installed the long rocker, how much of a gap is there between the old and new metal? _________________ Looking for a correct 1967 rear seat

Here's a few updated pictures of my interior. Pretty much finished on the inside for now.
Picked up my next project a few weeks ago... It's way worse off than my first. Major lower rust, but a complete bus.

| My advise is you dont need advise. Still cant believe your short rocker repair was so stellar you couldnt tell it was welded after ground down. Wondering what tecnique you used to grind that down sooo perfect. |
I used a $10 harbor freight pneumatic angle die grinder with abrasive disks and just took my time. I never let it build up too much heat. Also hit it with a little air to keep it cool once in a while. Wish I would have kept track of how many hours I put into the metal work on the bus.....actually probably better off that I didn't. Lot's of hours. I appreciate the complement. |

Thanks Ted...and thanks for sharing the pics. Sounds like you guys had a good time at the last Micros monthly gathering. I hope to make it to one soon.
