I've updated the FS ad with as much as I could recall last night. Hope this drums up some more interest.

Thanks all.

Once I get some time, I'll get some updated info and pics here, but here is the project I worked on today.

Fresh out of the box too.

A big thumbs up to Van-Cafe. I called them after this happened, and explained that I had bought the valve two months ago, just installed it, and this break happened.

They sent me a new valve that same day...awesome customer service!

...and two bags of cookies.

So I had an issue with the VSS not functioning, and after talking with Dan Fleming, he sent me a new one to test out, no questions whatsoever! Not only did it fix the issue, but I gotta say that is some good customer service from a small shop guy.

So with the VSS replaced, I was able to drive the van all about today and boy do I enjoy it!

I cannot wait to put some miles on this vehicle.

Please check the thread linked below for my costs:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=5878738#5878738

Since I doubt too many folks will be reading through this entire thread to look at costs, and the cost question comes up a lot, I posted the info for more folks to see.

On another note, the VSS is not functioning properly. When spinning the front left wheel, no voltage is registering, so I'm in contact with Dan Fleming; I'll post the results here.

Thanks,
Gavin

Try to get your hands on a OBD2 scantool that will allow you to read codes and view what the VSS is putting out.

Took the Westy out for a few test drives today, and aside from running out of gas about 100yards from the station, it went well Shocked

Of note, I think I am having an issue with the VSS. The engine will cut out and stutter very badly at 4400 rpm in every gear. From my quick reading, this is VSS related, so that is where I'll start the troubleshooting.

If anyone has advice on the Fleming VSS, and this issue, I'd appreciate the feedback.

Thanks,
Gavin

Sweeeet!! I bet you're excited to get things really buttoned up and start driving it. I'll be back in Flag in a couple of weeks and would love to take a ride with you to see how it compares to my 2.2 GW I'll be in touch.

Hey Gavin!

Good to see your engine swap. I am jealous!! Was wondering where you went. One of the Flagstaff split guys who moved away is coming into town this week and were going to have an engine swap/help work on his bus vw bbq out at my place. You should grab the wife and kids and cruise over. Would be good to see you and your westy. I will pm you with the details.

How long has the swap taken and do you mind if I ask how much you have invested?? Would love to do something similar. My split is my daily driver now but I take my westy to campouts so it is more comfortable for sleeping but it has a hard time on hills. So, curious about the conversion.

Hope you are well!!

Janyel

Janyel,

With class, kids, work and the Westy, I've been busy lately...that and I cancelled my FB account as it wasn't something that was doing anything for me.

Once I get the swap done, I'll put together a cost sheet for all to see. I honestly don't know what I have in it right now.

Time wise, I started in November on this, but havent been working on it with any regularity.

On the BBQ this weekend, shoot me a PM if you don't mind. My wife is at a conference and I've got the kiddos, so time may be a premium.

This weekend was productive.

I was able to finish the wiring run to the dash and get the VSS installed, mounted the ECU and relays under the rear seat, plumbed all the fuel lines, charcoal canister lines, and installed the atmospheric pressure sensor and pressure source solenoid, plumbed and clamped all the various coolant lines, installed the ignitor, got the cat flanges welded on, and the j-pipe cut and welded at the correct angle, and installed the PS lines.

At this point in time, I can fill the engine fill the various different fluids, and prime the systems, and start the damn thing....

.....but, I have class and work and kids to watch the next four days, so I doubt I will get much done until Friday. I'll spend some time going back over all my connections, and that is about it.

Cest la vie.

What did you use for air intake tube?

I used the early ej22. Sad to say I have my airbox just resting back there, hasn't given me any problem close to 20,000 miles later but big plan is to move the snorkle to drivers side and modify the box to intake from the snorkle.

Well, since my EJ22 is from a 1997, I had a different style of intake and box:

I went with an older set-up, and since my time and access to subarus is limited, I bought mine from Korkwood:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=567637

The box he supplies comes with an L shaped bracket to bolt to the engine bay for support. He also supplies an "S" pipe that puts the actual intake farther in to the light cavity where the snorkel would typically by.

So after going back and forth between running the wires for the CEL and VSS on the exterior or interior of the van, I opted for the interior. I didn't want to run two separate wires all the way up front, so I started looking around for something that would work.

At first, I thought I would go with some trailer wiring, and then cut the ends off, but finding a long enough run was not happening. I found this stuff instead:

And this is what it looks like:

I'll have two wires left over to run anything else I need to, and should be just fine.

To route the wires, I came through the AC wire grommet, and ran the wire under the closet cabinet, and back behind the other cabinets, following existing wiring runs. I'll snake them under the carpet and up to the dash a bit later on.

I also got the j-pipe O2 sensor bung welded in, so all I need now is to find an appropriately short flex joint.
