Our new blog entry talks about how to deal with the police in Mexico and Central America. Lots of people end up paying bribes to get out of sticky situations; this talks about how to bumble through without paying any bribes. Enjoy!

Blue Bay Bus Ha, Brad, decided to go with a sunroof, then some day if I go with a high top I'll will have a hole in the top that I can close off if I want to! For now the sun roof is the cheapest way to go! At least I can cook standing up. Laughing

Wow ! I just read this thread and most of the blog. Amazing trip , I will follow it from now on.
Nice to hear your experiences across Mexico where good and you felt safe. We drove our Vanagon from Cancun to Mexico City stopping at campsites along the way and this with our 2 and 4 year olds and never felt unsafe.
We also had a plan to drive only during the day , all those police and military checkpoints also helped to feel safe.
We have also done the Baja trip all the way to La Paz a few times and loved it every time.

Be safe and keep up the good blogging.

In case any of you are interested, I've added a place on the Drive Nacho Drive website (left side of the screen) where you can subscribe to blog updates through email. This way you'll be the first to know when Nacho breaks down and I start crying for help. Er, I mean Sheena starts crying for help. Yeah, that's the ticket...

Go here to subscribe, enter your email in the form and click "subscribe": www.drivenachodrive.com

Thanks,

Brad

@syncrogreg: We're leaving Flagstaff the Friday before Xmas. We'll go to Phoenix and stay there a week to visit fam and finish the last few Nacho projects (too snowy in Flagstaff now). We plan to head South on Jan. 2.

@debbiej: You have a very astute eye Smile That's actually one of the last projects I have to do before we depart. I plan to reinstall the factory steel cover over our stove, which will act as a heat deflector for the window when flipped up. We can move the curtains out of the way, but still, when using the rear burner it would get the window hot.

I feel kind of silly saying this, as you guys clearly have thought everything through, but be careful of the curtains and the flames from the stove.

the angle of the window behind the stove makes me glad for the lid and stove top on my OE cooktop. it is all that keeps the curtains from getting dirty, wet or catching fire.

@Carterzest: The front seats were brand new from a 2010 Honda Odyssey. They're not actually compatible with the Vanagon, but I spent 2 weeks of evenings/weekends cutting the underside out and redesigning the mounting structure. In the end they still swivel and we don't get numb butts any more Smile I also moved the seatbelt mounting up into the seat itself instead of down on the side of the seat mast. Much easier to access now.

@Others: Thanks!

Shocked Holy cow... that interior, and photos of said interior, look like something I'd find in Architectural Digest! Wow... very nice... and modern! Cool

Sorry if already asked, but, what front seats are you using?
