That was standard cube, because a) 20' high cubes are VERY rare and b) a 40' high cube is way more expensive if you have to pay for it alone....... _________________ tiger2asia 2011/12 - http://log.tigerbus.de/reisen/tiger2asia-201112/

TIGERBUS IS BACK HOME! Met at the border by our friends we went to eat at our favourite restaurant before we finally headed home. "Tobi" the cat recognized us and my mother bought pieces of wood for a new fence that "only" has to be built now. Seems like everything back to normal within minutes
Sarahs university has started and we're trying to sort out all the things that we cut off prior our departure... apartment, job, telefon, money... This is NOT the end of the tiger2asia project, as the missing video episoded suggest. There is a lot more to come, including a BOOK in both english and german. Thanks for all your support, thanks to all the people we met, stay tuned, the Tiger is still on the move! )
Thanx,

Rebuilt? Hmmm... In Turkey I replaced 4th gear after it threw its teeth. 3rd had to go aswell, as the flying metal destroyed it, too. Second time the pinion bearing retainer nut came loose and the pinion went backwards through the housing... gears (except G) were undamaged. As the housing with the pinion bearing and ring/pinion were destroyed aswell, we replaced the whole box with a used one from Germany, which had been stripped down to the bare minimum (no bell housing, no diff, no nose cone, no levers, switches, whatsoever) and reassembled using our old parts in Ulaan Bataar. Unfortunately I did not replace the 4th gear on that occasion, leaving us with yet another (3rd) fail 3000kms into Russia.
That's already it! )

Martin,
Love the updates, thanks.
Afraid to ask, but how many times have you had to remove the transmission and rebuild it? I just rebuilt a transmission for my TDI swap, I used HD Weddle stuff...hope it's enough!
Thanks, Joel _________________ Joel Lane

Hello
Long story short: In Mongolia we smashed the pinion bearing retainer nut, meaning it simply jumped on the thread. Of course pinion bearing became loose and walked backwards through the gearbox, ruining the G synchroizer teeth and making the ring/pinion overlap smaller and smaller. One day in the middle of Mongolia the pinion and the ring just gave up. Total failure alltogether. 400kms of towing by a fellow Landcruiser who HAPPEND to be there just in time into Ulaan Bataar. LUCKILY sarah had flown back to Germany to sort out some University stuff, so just two weeks of waiting for me all alone in Ulaan Bataar, then Sarah came back to Mongolia with our fully stripped down spare gearbox (no diff, no nose cone, nothing else...). Put it all back together and off we went into Russia. 3000kms later the 4th threw all its teeth again. Should have replaced it right there and then in Mongolia, but I didn't think about it. Of course the spare box wasn't new, so that could have been foreseen. Anyway, 12hrs by the road and we went on with yet another 4th gear - i put the shot blasted 0.85 back in, that took us all the way from Turkey to Mongolia. It does its job fine ever since, we're about 1800kms short of St. Petersburg now, near KIROV in the forrest Apparently the HD pinion retainer nut and 3rd/4th from Weddle could have made this trip much more enjoyable. Oh well, we simply didn't have the funds.
I'll put some picture from russia on the blog right now
Btw, some russian vanagon driver in Sibiria presented me a 3rd and a 4th just in case... ))
.martin
P.S.: Lake Baikal is nice... )

Martin y Sarah,
Thanks for the trip update and great video #4. Seems you have been in China a long time...also seems you enjoyed and learned a good deal.
Btw, other Germans out doing stuff today, 4July in the Tour de France, was sprinter Andre Greipel winning Stage 4 to Rouen.
Drive safe. _________________ '65 T1 Sedan

Yeah I'll tell ya, with all the manufacturing being moved to Germany these days the quality of parts has really suffered. _________________ Shop for unique and useful Vanagon accessories at the Vanistan shop:

Latest news relay from TigerBus f-book page.
Both front wheel bearings, both upper and lower balljoints, lower bushings of the front shocks... all that f*cked in Tibet! Two full days under the van - luckily, we had most of that stuff as spares and the rest came from Germany via FedEx Thanks to Stefan from GMB, Volkmar and TK!
(All the above parts had done around 40k miles when we left home, all good quality stuff...)
