Some day, some future owner will think of you.

What they will think I can only imagine.

I wasn't able to start the van during my last trip due to a missing throttle cable pin and a mangled hall sender plug. I ordered the replacement plug from van-cafe and should get my hands on a spare pin thanks to a fellow samba member and Albuquerque local. I'll have it running on my next trip at the end of the month and see if my engine was spared when it overheated.

Also, after adjusting my valves, I am now certain that I installed the distributor drive shaft about 90d clockwise past where it "should" be. I'm deciding to leave it that way and should be alright as long as the firing order, valve adjustments and timing are all on point. All of my spark plug wires will just appear to be rotated one spot CW.

holy crap!

Talk about a thread returning from the dead.

I enjoyed reading it till this last page not once looking at the dates in the thread... and at the very end the most recent post from the OP bringing it back to life.

Thread watched! Cool

Well guys, I'm sorry to have left everybody hanging for all this time, but there was no happy ending that y'all might have been hoping for. The engine did run well for a short period of time but I soon lost a belt on a short stretch of highway where I in no way could pull over. In just the 1/2 mile it took from when I noticed the temperature alert to when I could pull over, the engine overheated enough blow the head gaskets. (I used to be waay too considerate. If this ever happens again I'll block an entire freeway for all I care). FYI, if you see the battery warning light come on, it might mean there's something up with the alternator which might mean the belt fell off which is the same belt that runs the water pump.

I was in a huge rush to get it running again and had read somewhere that you can reuse the copper head gaskets so I did another head job the next day which failed miserably.

At this point I gave up and took out a loan to buy a lame truck and pretty much let the Vanagon rot for the last 3 years.

Well said truck was recently totaled and fortunately I was paid a fair amount for it. In a few weeks, I'm flying back to Albuquerque to give the van another go!

I'll provide a more technical update soon...

Dang! Last chapter missing. I think after readin all the pages with the tools, the confusion, when it is time I am pulling the engine, strapping to a pallet and sending it out to be done.

Looks like "the man with the van" hasn't been back since 2013. Unless he's using a different handle now, or someone knows the guy personally. We'll probably never know.

Yeah, annoying, right? Vanish from the face of the earth just as things are wrapping up. Hate reading build threads like this.

Actually, it seems that the engine builder created a few new threads to finish getting the engine running.

If one add the three threads together, I guess one could assume the motor is now running. He would probably have been back and created another one if it didn't.

The engine is back in and I just got done changing the fuel lines. The wiring in the engine compartment was a nightmare, I've spent two days replacing wires that were spliced 2-3 times just within a couple of feet. Everything is finished except I completely obliterated the quick connect to the middle green wire for the distributer while trying to remove the wire. Once that's fixed tomorrow I can fill it up with all the fluids and see if it starts!

At first I thought the last guy who changed this knew what he was doing but sure enough there were gaskets on both sides under the plethora of RTV

I didn't have feeler gauges but I placed a magnetic straight edge over the gears and measured the play by pushing the gears down and letting the magnet pull them back up. I had 0.0035” so I skipped the gaskets, just the right stuff.

Engine strapped down. I put a wrench on the pulley bolt to hold the crankshaft still while I torqued the flywheel down.

Crankshaft end play is very high. I had to order two .38mm shims to get it down to .10mm.

Standard sized bearings. I ended up just using my calipers to measure my crank. If you go to a machine shop for anything, I would recommend you also just have them measure your crank so you don't have to buy a micrometer. I took my crank in to have them pull the gears pulled off. They charged me for 15 minutes so I wish I had a short list of misc requests to get my money's worth.

Nice! That's easy

I bought a toaster oven a few years back for the same thing. My wife has found a few pinions sitting in her freezer for the same purposes.

Excellent, I use a small toaster oven normally used for for smaller powder coating jobs. No oil to interfere or create an extra burning hazard.
