Thomas,
Good.
So my take is that this was the one in Komenda's testcar for nearly a year.
Fuhrmann and F. Porsche hadone as well as did Neitzel.
The '42' in the Int. Nr. and we have them for about 85% of the 4-cam motors.
It was great to cooperate on this!!

Thomas,
You can help when youget back as to the Mathe purchase date and '42" maybeon motor. We then may havesolved the motor question.
As to Komenda---the little more I know will be in the book.
Best,

Thank you very much for your help. Let me know if I can help someday. |

Thomas,
This one is very difficult. There were 3-4 motors aroud 90028 that did not as the rest, go into customer 550s. For example, one was sold for the 1956 Bergspyder. So, it was used before its sale as a motor.
I know that Mathe wanted an early motor. I think I have some correspondence somewhere from him in 1954 asking for a 4-cam motor. They said 'no'. I would not be surprised if they soldhim 90028 in 1955.
Now, 12215 was a Komenda test car from June 1954. It was built without a motor through regular production. When sold, much later, it had 34131.
There were other spare chassis around the same time that went went to insiders, incl F. Porsche.
I believe that 90028 may well have gone into 12215 after 34131, then could well have been soldto Mathe.
I am guessing a little put think the internal number other case half is '42'.
Correct?

Thomas/All,
I will come back to this later today. Sorry but something is taking all of my morning and more.
Now---it may be that P sold the motor to Mathe (Thomas, please tell us about that car). I do think it went into 122xx earlier (a werks car later sold without a motor). I agree it was a spare in a sense--did not go into a 550 or 356 customer car.
More later. Sorry.

Steve, Otto Mathe was known for changing/using everything against/for everything. He Even used his licence Plate on all of his Cars. We have Seven of his Cars and it is Clearly visible that he exchanged Parts from One to the other. The reason i am telling this Is i dont know for which Car he initially Bought the Engine. But the only period pictures of the Car using the Engine are Those with the Fetzenflieger .
To find out more about the Fetzenflieger and my other Car you might check

Thomas...Steve and Adam were just joking (having fun) about the 1952 356 coupe being something very special and rare. Of course, a nice model 356 to have, but it was never installed with a 4-cam motor.
Your inquiry about the Spyder 4-cam motor is interesting though...and you are fortunate to have Steve reply to you about it.

Adam/All,
Just to be clear---and serious---I do not beleive that there was anything special re 12209 (except, of course, that Adam once owned it).
We'll see if Thomas has some more info that will help. It is interesting trying to sort out these kinds of things.

All i have are Several letters from Ernst Piëch and Porsche Salzburg to Otto Mathe dating from 1956 or 57 (Not sure , have to Check) regarding the Sale of the Engine to Mathe. He also Bought Several other 550 stuff with it like Trans, rims, brake System, early 550 Oil tank etc. all still installed in our Fetzenflieger
.The engine number was mentioned in there so I am quite sure that it was Never installed in a Customer 356. |

Steve, I was wondering why you were calling it a replacement chassis, the car I had was 12009, not 12209. |

Steve-
Don't worry, if I get something I sell it. Jim at EASY taught me his mantra for selling parts and making a living. It is,
"I am not running a fucking museum, I am selling Porsche Parts, if I have a part and you want to buy it, I will sell it."
Only on rare occasions does something make it into my private collection, because if I kept everything cool, I would be a cool broke dude. |

But, there is a little humor here and none, well, you know.
Ciao,

"this was probably the most important Porsche ever built."
(Well, that got my attention.)

Sez the man who sold Speedster 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6. You sir are living in a glass house!
12009 was a fun one, it was saved from becoming a desk, I bought it, got it rolling, an Aussi dude bought it, sent it to Bruce Baker's for the full outlaw, I think it is back in Oz now, but not finished.
Bruce might be able to share some better pics. |

12009 was one of the few spares with almost no info. It was sold without a motor. It did go through P production and finished 30 November 1953.
Adam, this was probably the most important Porsche ever built. How could you possibly have sold it?
Best,
Steve |

Thomas,
550-07 was destroyed as was 550-14. I know the motors that went into them before they were destroyed. And, before 550-07 was destroyed, it had a replacement frame. None of it except a few misc. parts exist today (and most of those on on a spare chassis carrera Speedster builtby Blendl and now in Germany. 550-14 was also destroyed before any need for 90028.
I'm convinced (at the moment at least) that it was 12xxx that got 90028 first.
Best,
Steve |
