Well, if it's just that raw fuel smell, start by replacing all the hoses from your tank to the tunnel, you might have a few extras for vapor recovery and emissions controls, replace those too.
Back by the transmission there's another fuel line coming out of the tunnel to another steel line that runs into the engine compartment. Replace that as well.
The big hoses that go from the filler flap to the tank, basically anything that's going to carry fuel if it hasn't been replaced in the last 2 or so years should be replaced. Check the seam of your gas tank as well...might have a leak at the seam, and there's a gasket under the fuel sender (the round thing on the top of the gas tank).
Heat exchangers...no idea where to start...maybe remove, force air (shop vac) through the exhaust hoses and plug one end...? |

Top of my list of things to do this weekend is check the heat exchangers for leaks and find the source of my exhaust/gas fumes. Can anyone tell me how to go about this?
Thanks in advance. |

| If you're smelling that much gas fumes I'd check/replace all your fuel lines ASAP! |

| Great advice, thanks. It's probably pretty important given that the driver's side window doesn't roll down! |

I haven't had a chance to check it out yet. Maybe the battery or something else. It didn't have a smidge of juice after I shut it off last night. I'll take a look tonight.
Heat exchangers, eh? Gotta check that out. The fumes gave me an awful headache… What was I saying?

A leaking heat exchanger can be mixing exhaust fumes with the fresh air being blown from the engine to the cabin, that means carbon monoxide as well. So best off being safe rather than sorry. At the very least shut the heaters off and check under the car that the cables have closed the flaps properly as sometimes even if you move the lever in the car the flap on the other end is old and doesn't close all the way. |

Congratulations on your new Ghia
The fumes are more than likely leaking heat exchangers, so you might want to address those pretty quickly for safety's sake. Unless it's petrol fumes in which case probably an old flexi-pipe needs renewing.
If you can check the voltage on the battery whilst charging and it's OK, chances are you might have a duff main battery earth strap.
Is the 'bouncing' due to it been lowered too much or do you think the shocks are a bit past thier best? |

congrats!
How do you know it isn't charging? The light doesn't turn off?
is the battery capable of holding a charge? |

Took the plunge and bought it. Did a partial trade that worked out great. Driving the freeways in rush hour was sobering. I think it's been about 40 years since I drove a VW. Boy, the memories come rushing back. Fun.
Car still isn't charging, despite the previous owner replacing the generator and voltage reg. I'll have to see what I can find.
But bouncing along at 75mph was a thrill. And huffing those gas fumes.
So thank you all who contributed your advice and expertise. Salud!

Looks like a nice car, you can't get them in that condition over here for $4,300
Good luck, I'm sure you'll love the car, and don't worry if it's got some filler, it's a 40 year old car ! |
Thanks. Hey, I'm older, have more filler, and I'm goin' strong! |

Sounds like you've done your field work well...
and this will just be the first of many trips to the bank for you and your new Ghia!
Congrats!
Get it home and live with it for a week or so before you start tearing everything apart. Your relationship is just beginning. |

Well, I drove back out to see the car again. Posted another ton of photos.
I used a magnet to check for Bondo and felt/looked at every under-part I could. I only saw one small area of rot, along the edge of the driver's rocker. Not serious. So, I'm pretty confident the car isn't rusty. Floors are perfect, etc.
As for the turn indicators, I cannot find where they were changed. I expected to find evidence of welding or patching, but nothing. Smooth inside and out. So, since I like the bullet style indicators a LOT better, I think of it as a plus. I get the 1600, IRS, old style bumpers and bullet indicators. Perfect.
We negotiated yesterday from 5K down to $4,300 so that's the price. Monday I'll go to the bank. Everybody say, "Do it, do it"!
Thanks to all for your help. I will not be a stranger around here, I'm sure. More advice?

| Looks like close to a $4300 car to me - - I'd pull up the carpet and look at the pans. If the front lights were changed who cares? - I suspect your not buying it for the "collector" value. I would bet it is filled with bondo, but for $4K your not going to get a pristine vehicle - just a cool occasional driver that can be tinkered with. I would offer $3900 and go from there... |
