Since not many people will pop for the cost of a 17mm allen wrench socket....this plug being its only usage I can think of on our cars......what really works well, is cheap and handy to throw in the tool box....is a lug bolt from any watercooled VW wheel.
It is a tight, dead fit 17mm. Just grip the threaded end in either a large pair of vice grips...or even better....you can grip the threaded end with a small pipe wrench like I do. Works like a charm.
Also. as mentioned....anti-sieze and a little less "hand" keeps this from happening. Ray |

It's a pain in the arse, but you can also fill through the back up light switch hole |

My mistake I typed the wrong word I meant loosen the fill plug first.
EDIT: success! Thanks for the idea, Dale. I use a variation of it to get the damn thing loose. Way too tight. Instead of a ratchet, I use a 17mm like you said. But I slid a 30 mm wrench onto the 17, put the open end of the 17 onto the transmission plug sock. With the circle end of the 17 at a 7-8 o'clock position, I cranked down on the 30 wrench and that had enough torque to loosen it. Limited space with the car jacked up limited what I can do effectively but this idea worked like a charm. Thanks for the help. |
Think that was Dave that suggested extra leverage , NOT Dale....

Don't know where u got the info to loosed drain 1st, now u know why it's wrong, if u can't put oil back in why would u drain it 1st?? Seems u didn' t drain just loosen , make sure all crud cleaned from where hex goes, i've removed several and a light tap on the hex seemed to help also. |

Heat it up to near boiling. For those I start with the 2 foot breaker bar, th4ey are usually sized pretty tight |

Could try a little heat on it too.... When you put it back, if not Teflon tape, maybe some "anti-sieze"...

I'll give that a try. I better take a breather before I go at it frustrated and do more bad then good I doubt the PO had it that tight. Is this what happens when the filler plug is not loosened first. If so, why? Any more help on getting this bugger off is appreciated. |

Slide a 17mm wrench on the 17mm socket or allen wrench to form a "T" handle then insert it into the drain plug. You can now use two hands to get more leverage.
When you reinstall them you only torque the drain plugs to 14 Ft/Lb and it is OK to use teflon tape on the threads. The plug with the magnet goes on the bottom and the plug without a magnet goes on the side. _________________ 2017 Street Comp Champion - Thunder Valley Raceway Park - Noble, OK

|

I have heard how one should loosen the FILL plug first, or else. Never knew what would happen if I didn't but I do think I now know why! It is not my first time draining a transmission. This time my split boot was dripping transmission fluid and when I they dripped quite a bit before I got new ones on. I plan to drain and fill with new fluid. So I got my trusty 17 transmission plug and started with the fill plug and holy shit it is dead nut tight. I got an extension and tried to turn it with no luck. I assume that the leaky boots were like pulling the drain plugs first I figure. Can someone tell me how to get this fill plug off without extreme measures? I'm so close to getting my big back on the road. [/b]
